Friday Recommends

For my sins, I'm going to rationalise my home office today. I am completely rubbish at tidying, but with the shiny new part of our house looking so beautiful, and a few folks coming around tomorrow, I need to commit to this. Wish me luck.

So I don't have much more to offer than a handful of recommendations, to which you may wish to add yours.

Starting with …

I think this week's Media7 emerged pretty well in the circumstances. I was just about to do the run-through when the terrible news of the second explosion came through, which meant that -- after standing around in stunned silence for a while with everyone else -- I had to rewrite the top of the script, which introduced our planned discussion of Pike River and the media.

Our panellists, Ian De Terte and Denis Welch, only learned of the confirmed loss of life on disembarking at Auckland airport. To make it just a little more unusual, Ian and Denis were delayed, so I had to do the planned end of the show -- with Sarah Henry on the royal wedding announcement -- first. I'm told it actually worked quite well that way for the audience, who were glad of some levity.

Then there's Unknown Mortal Orchestra. My darling heard this song on the radio and said "is this the new Mint Chicks?". Yes, it very probably is. So, the video:

And the free download at Bandcamp.

Not unrelated: Mint Chicks' Kody Nielson and Bic Runga. He's producing her new album, and they'll be playing together at the Big Day Out.

On Soundcloud, my man Leftside Wobble has a neat re-edit of Yothu Yindi's 'Treaty'.

Giogio Moroder's electro-happy 'I Wanna Rock You', from 1979.

And I have two double passes for next Thursday's LATE at the Museum. It's the last for the year, and focuses on faith, with Lloyd Geering. First in, first served.

PS: The Public Address Word of the Year 2010 will launch on Monday. I'm delighted to say that sponsorship love will be provided by Whisky Galore.

PPS: If you haven't already, read Hadyn's post about The Annual Wellingtonista Awards, then have a bit of a vote.
