  • Hard News: Need to Know,

DeepRed, I remember that, and his point was actually how crap it was that Labour had got rid of the strike wing of our airforce. He didn't really follow through on the ramifications of shooting down a plane over a crowded stadium, surrounded by crowds of demonstrators, but since everyone was feeling sorry for the Americans his stupidity was allowed to slide.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Joe, old Macs are beautifully retro. I love the fish tanks and such that people make out of them. They're like old Volkswagons. I never wanted one at the time, and I sure don't want one now, but I still think they look pretty cool.

I would only support an inquiry if it also looked into the Te Quaeda raids. Spying on groups is spying on groups whether they are Greenpeace or Maori activists.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

Matthew, Redbaiter's tireless style has unfortunately set the tone for Kiwiblog. It wasn't always quite so uniform in it's childishness, but trolling is like cancer. The cures are drastic, and carry no certainty of success. The disease causes a slow and horrible death of the host, as the cancer takes over. It used to be that amongst all the trolls you'd find serious commentary and analysis, but nowadays it's getting to the point where you wade your way through all that crap and find absolutely nothing from any non-trolls.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Peter, I agree. I'm also a PC user for a ton of reasons. Inertia and price are not the only things. But I can see that Apple make very nice machines nonetheless.

Simon, it's not odd. The extra price of the Mac does need constant justification. I'm sure there's plenty of truth in such testimonials too, PCs are a pain in the ... date ... to deal with.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

With National I'm reminded of a joke I heard in a previous job that a departing CIO tell as advice to the incoming one:

Pete took over from Trevor and Trevor handed him 3 envelopes, saying they contained advice and were to be opened at times of crisis.
When Pete encountered his first crisis, he opened the first envelope, which said inside "Blame everything on me". Which he did, and it worked very well and he rode out the crisis. When he encountered his second crisis he opened the second one which said "Blame the systems" (this was an IT department). That saved his bacon again, and he rode happily to the third crisis, at which he gleefully ripped open the last of these incredibly useful pearls of wisdom. Inside it said "Write 3 notes".

Seems that the Nats have already torn open their first envelope, in response to the recession. Everything that was good about Labour's books last year is of course now horribly wrong. And that is all Labour's fault for not controlling the international credit crunch.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Sophie, I run a battery electric mower that does instantly download the lawn to compost. It's called mulching ;-)

I have to say, I love that mower.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

David, all sounds good. I wouldn't endorse RAID particularly, was just talking of boot disc mirroring technology. For Apple, I have no idea what they have.

Personally my disc mirrors have saved both my data and huge downtime, as you don't have to reinstall your machine.

But I've heard plenty of horror stories too. The worst is when the uncorrupted drive decides to mirror the corrupted one. Your highly redundant backup process is not paranoid, it is wise.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

I'm utterly beguiled by How To Look Good Naked, so like I'm going to sneer at your low-brow tastes. :)

For some reason, my eye delivered that to me as How to Cook Naked. No less credible than half of what people will watch on TV.
