  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

Some work I was involved in a few years back in NSW estimated the costs of training long-term unemployed and people with disabilities to a sufficient level for them to be employable. The costs were significantly higher than training school leavers but not prohibitively so.

Judith Collins just mentioned on the Wire (bfm) that it wont cost anything for training as there is room to help the front line staff at Winz once they get rid of the bureaucrats. She also mentioned that most working people had figured out what to do with their sick children so that wouldn't be a problem because... oh yeah, she is a working mum. I didn't know she was a solo parent;)

and families decide whether to have children, or not. your choice to have children shouldn't entitle you to increased state assistance in and of itself.

So, instead of forced labour , how about, one child per family? I'm sure that would work eh?:)
And if a nanny is paid to look after children, what is wrong with a solo parent being paid to look after their own children?
Of the casual jobs out there(better to have casual than part time for employer benefit), hospo was mentioned. Two people I know recently had situations where their jobs were on the line. one booked one five hour shift off work for an annual function one month in advance, only to be threatened with being fired if he didn't show, when the boss forgot and rostered him on. One guy was a coach for a sport and although he could split shifts to accomodate his job on Sunday, the boss wanted him to decide which was more important, job or the wee children that he coached. He chose the children.

  • Hard News: Heard any good tunes lately?,

Just noticed my posts. Am known for repeating myself but not knowing I've repeated myself, puts a whole new light on the ol' brain haemorrhage:)
One thing I do remember about The Cure,1981 Capitol, Sydney, was the Paddington Green Hotel on the night we went to the concert. Upstairs playing a game of pool afterwards, and in walks Robert Smith with the band, so there we finished the evening playing more pool with The Cure .....nice guys.

  • Island Life: Let’s learn English, with…,

that National are now preparing to work in a similar way.

What's with the now?.National set up Trusts as soon as they read the EFA specifically to hide any monies the party has for election costs,(in small donations of course, wouldn't want the donors identified) I remember a gst issue with National that still is not paid, but ,whoa be tied molly whoppy, if it's Winston that could be accused. There seems to be a misconception that ,because the leader changes, the party does. How would you have party loyalty if that be the case? The party doesn't change, and if you think it did, then all it's supporters are dipsey, Eric Roy on Back benchers one night confirmed exactly how I felt about his Party. His comment was about it being better if they could just get rid of the public and as people were cringing he backed up with that nobody watched Wallace's show anyway so it was ok. That confirmed my impression of him.
I cannot remember an incident where the National Party cared about the average punter in the street. The polls are supposed to be on side of the Nats. If so, why even be worried? People lurve Johnny! Wasn't that the idea. This party isn't giving policy, it's giving us a super rich guy to entice you to believe you too can have a piece of that pie. It is the party of tokenism. I find that disingenuous. Of course it's just my opinion. And I don't like that pie.
