Heather, I bet the people who have to drive you around don't see it that way.
Very bad assumption. When I lived in towns & smaller cities I biked. In Wellington/London/Auckland I've taken public transport and walked. Nights on the town I take a taxi, as will most of my driver friends. All it takes is a little extra planning. I'll gratefully accept an offered lift from friends, but your recalcitrant wife I am not.
All in all, it was just a throwaway comment I made in jest, although partly driven by my own bugbear of people implying that I'm somehow defective, or terribly selfish, because I don't own a car (none of whom, I might add, are the friends that offer to pick me up or drop me off). The assumption that to be a functional kiwi resident you must have your own transport is wrong.

Michele, I think there's a lot of value what you've explained about the re-crafting of good material, but I think it's just something that doesn't need to be analysed by the audience. A comedian/craftsman may watch a show and think "hahaha, I love how they've changed x to improve that gag", whereas an audience member would basically just find it still funny. All the extra tweaking a comedian does, the change in tone or timing, dissembling, change of context etc - the final yardstick is eventually just that an audience that's heard the joke before are still laughing. If interrogated we may not be able to pinpoint why, aside from a vague, "well, (s)he told it a little differently", but since it's still fresh, it's still funny.
It reminds me a little of a couple of music festivals I went to, and saw two of my favourite bands (at that time), twice within the season. One band did exactly the same set both times, so the second time was real flat. The other band pretty much did the same set, but shuffled the song order a bit, and noodled around with a new song as well, bit of different banter, and it was awesome.

On the one hand you express disgust and indignation about the likes of Wishart but when those attacked try to defend themselves you say they should STFU and not get into the sewer, as if somehow they are Wishart's equivalents.
Actually, I agree with Craig (a trend which is becoming increasingly unsettling) - I think the ministers would benefit from distancing themselves from the mudslinging as much as possible, instead of lashing back with such tacky retorts as "who's giving him money anyway?".
I think everyone should know what a little piece of trash this Idour is, but the politicians should leave the tabloid journalism to the...errr..tabloid journalists. The PM & co could easily have just issued a nothing press release, quietly forwarded on any info to the relevant parties, then sat back and left Wishart to choke himself on his own shoddy work.
