Access: Some aspects of New Zealand’s…, in reply to
After I had taken considerable trouble to provide detailed and largely negative feedback on the FFC process to the MOH, this is what Jill Lane as their media spokesperson had to say:
"We've had no complaints from these people who have joined the system that it's been difficult or that it's hard for them to continue on with it."
Ms Lane says the ministry is encouraging disabled people to consider the option at every opportunity."I haven't met her but she lost my respect when she released the statement linked to in Rosemary's post.
Now I guess I'd better re read Hilary's post and try to get back on topic, thanks Sacha.

If you want to be part of the review the MOH contact is Christine Petch, she can pass your contact details to the people who will be paid to do the review. CarersNZ have failed to explain this, preferring to channel traffic themselves. They are likely to be the only Carers support agency left standing soon, perhaps because they are compliant.
http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/320296/carers-society-lose-some-fundingOnce the review is complete, the MOH is responsible for what is released to the public, not the "independent" reviewer(s).
There's a very big reason why few people get FFC, it's because NASCs told them on initial enquiry that they were not eligible, regardless of actual eligibility. Taikura was flooded with enquiries for some weeks after the introduction of FFC but most were told they were ineligible without proper checking of actual status.
We were told we were ineligible but we are. Lots of people will have taken NO for an answer.
There are many other reasons for the low uptake, but basically it's because low uptake is what the MOH wanted, Ryall was scared shitless it would cost bigtime. -

How did we end up with some of the existing stuff, like the original OIA and the culture that followed before all these efforts to sidestep it, and the Bill of Rights Act, and MMP?
I think we had politicians who were trying to make this a better place, and they had the power to do it. Unfortunately I don't think enough of the politicians currently holding power have the best interests of New Zealand uppermost.

The trouble is that the way things are works wonderfully well for those in power. Unless that changes, why should they fix it? They're ashamed of the tactics being used, evidenced by the degree to which the tactics have been hidden. They probably fear a voter backlash but it will take a much better informed electorate to produce that, so the emphasis will continue to be on deflection, misinformation and outright lies.

More and more we need journalists and the media to work hard and with integrity on our behalf. How can the public show support for quality reporting and disgust at low quality journalism to a sufficient degree that the overall culture changes? Is it even possible, given the ownership and funding sources of the media?

But one reason those people are less inclined to answer now is that they simply don't trust the media to use that open honest answer fairly.
A valid point. I wish I could see something effective we could do to promote fair and honest reporting.

Hard News: The Hager saga continues, in reply to
I see Tim Groser has 'assured' us that the TPPA will not affect Pharmac's ability to source cheaper generic drugs, Hah!
Another example of a statement reported by the MSM without challenge, supporting information or evidence to the contrary.

Some sort of sanction is certainly needed. At present it's all one way, there are lots of (political) reasons to delay or refuse to provide information, and no penalty at all for failure to comply with the law. Is a law really a law if it cannot be enforced?

Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to
In short, I think we need to supplant the news media with information media, devoid of rhetoric and spin. It seems to be happening already, that people already seek data out for themselves, but it could be vastly improved.
I'm with you here. There's so much damage simply from the senseless repetition of untrue sound bites without challenge or correction, let alone the spun stories and the lack of focus on what is really important.
