  • Hard News: On the Box,

Most of what I've seen is a bit meh but where the format has really clicked for me has been documentaries.

I second Craig's opinion on Coraline but the best use of digital 3D so far has been the U2 concert flick. That was when I saw the potential of the medium to behave differently to 2D - and not in a cheap stunt-y way.

I simply cannot understand how he survived a Mancunian upbringing without getting his pretty face regularly smashed.

He didn't have a Mancunian upbringing. He's from Leytonstone.

  • Island Life: Bye, bye, you peculiar guy.,

Right in the middle of my nine-year-old obsession with the novelty records that were 'punk' to everyone else, I fell in love with Emerson Lake & Palmer's Fanfare for the Common Man.

  • Field Theory: Just one point in it,

Now they hold on to the trophy that, in all honesty, doesn't need to exist in the first place.

I don't know that it doesn't need to exist. I like thefact of the Gallaher Trophy and what it stands for (and I don't much mind that we have to win it back).

  • Hard News: Not many, if any ...,

Irish Elvis-impersonator The King put out an album called Gravelands featuring covers of songs by other dead artists - including a quite lovely version of Song to the Siren.

"Flip you, Melon Farmer!" - from the tv version of Repo Man.

Donny is actually Walter's imaginary friend

    Now you're just being silly.

And then there is also the theory that Ferris Bueller doesn't exist but is simply a wish-fulfillment figment of Cameron's imagination. The Fight Club premise if you will.

  • Field Theory: 172800 very important seconds,

I think it was the judges trying to send a message that they were looking for something 'deeper'.

As a Wellington judge I don't think we are ever trying to send a message as such - we are looking for films that succeed on their own terms. If you're trying to be funny, then be funny. If story is most important to you, make it a great story.

Last year our top three were simply the films we were most impressed with (and could watch multiple times and still be impressed with) - and then Peter Jackson trumped us with F*Dance (which was great) and it went on to win the entire comp. So what do we know...

  • Hard News: Veitch,

From my blog post on The Governor:

A couple of years ago, while I was running the bar at Downstage, I was lucky enough to share a couple of conversations with acting legend (and Laureate) George Henare who was playing Dracula at the time. He told us some tales of shooting the New Zealand historical epic “The Governor” back in the late 70s and I asked him why it was so difficult to actually see. He told me that the actors’ contracts stated that any further screenings meant that they got to be paid again - at the fairly extraordinary rate of 100%. I asked him whether he felt sad that so many New Zealanders wouldn’t be able to see such an important piece of work - not just the colonial history but the television history. “No,” said George, “You want to do something with it, pay me. That was the deal.”

    The rest is here.

I'll be prudent here and assume that the whole gibbering idiot thing is just an occasional on-air persona.
