Great confirmation from the Will David.
A perusal of the Will of George Hildebrand Alington might offer something too:

I still think that the birth mother of the adopted girl lived so close by that she must have seen her daughter…..curious

Interesting that Alex Turnbull Library has a "Restricted" note against Use/Reproduction on Eileen Winter Coleman's file.

Not quite next door to each other but close enough for Eliza Ann Winter to see Eileen Winter Coleman IF she knew where her child went to be raised. Alington did not want Eliza to know but at 23 months of age I would think a mother would recognise her child out playing or walking along St Albans’ streets.

The 1893 Electoral Roll for Women(such a useful resource!!) finds:
Eliza Ann WINTER, Domestic duties, Caledonian Rd, St Albans
Amelia COLEMAN, Domestic duties, Webb St, St Albans
Winifred B ALINGTON, Dom duties, Methven.
I don’t know ChCh – would Eliza have been a neighbour to the Colemans?

I'm with you David re Dianne's super sleuth work on this. I've done a bit of genealogy in the past decade but Dianne leaves me in the dust!
I am about to post my adoption mystery to that board and see if they can find the mother I need to find to finish the puzzle.

And this caught my eye for George Coleman on National Archives "Archway" website"
Coroners Inquests - Case files - Canterbury - [female infant at dwellinghouse of George Coleman] [Use copy MICRO U 5420] The year was recorded as 1900.
It is a Min of Justice file, lodged at Nat Archive Wellington. It could all be a red herring of course and assumptions are dangerous things.

What was the original address of your home in ChCh please David ?- a Wises or City Directory may shed some light on who was residing there at the time of all this paperwork.
