  • Hard News: Screen Wars,

    Serious question:

Does anyone outside the TV industry give a sh** about the TV awards?

Thought not. Why are they even on national TV?

At least with the Emmeys or Oscars you get a temper tantrum or 2!

  • Hard News: Sunday blues, and we're on Sky,

Urgh. I watched Jonathan Ross once on BBC (about 2 months ago - I dont own a TV, even tho I work for BBC Worldwide). He's AWFUL. A stale crossant could interview people better.

... and the best thign about Media7: the podcast got fixed (or my iphone did) so part 1 is at the top, so it plays 1,2,3, not 1, go back into the list, select 2, back back into the list, select 3.....

Nice :) Thanks to who ever did that. And, more to the point, to RB and SP and everyone else for publishing it in the first place!

  • Hard News: The Social Retail,

I'm assuming a few other wellintonians have said it already, but Wine Seeker is, without a doubt, teh schiznit.

To the point where we order wine for kiwi's from them, from London. Bank transfer, badaboom. Two cases of champers for a friends wedding, on time, with a couple of free ones thrown in. Or ship it over here for the few bits we _need_, but can't get here.

Drop in and have a taste. I did often when working in the building above them :)

  • Hard News: Just shoot me,

Interesting post. I havn't seen it in the papers, because, despite living in London and working for the BBC, I avoid the media (especially the printed media) at pretty much all costs.

Even the non-insane outlets are, well, kinda insane. I had no idea just how insane until I got here, and the closer you get to the "celebs", the crazier it gets. Womans Day and co have nothing, absolutely nothing, on the pap mags here.

But hey, at least she didn't kidnap her own daughter then try to get the finders fee.... tho to be honest, I'm not sure which one is worse.

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

Oh, and I forgot: Ads? only one MPU? does fairfax have too much money, or does that one placement now command more money 'cos there is only one?

That said, I didn't actually notice the lack of a banner. shows how banner blind I am.

Nice work overall, stuff people :)

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

    on stuff.co.nz:

Above the fold, I (almost) love it. Clean, clear etc. Not sure I like the image thing on the LHS, but we'll give it a go :)

Below the fold: good, but I dont see the point of the customizations. I can't log in, so I have to customize between both my machines. And I can only hope it'll work on my iphone, which is actually the device is MOST read stuff on!!

stuff: please consider ripping off nzherald's mobile interface. k'thanks.

Actually, I stand corrected. I CAN log in. It just took me a couple of visits to see the login link :)

I'm not sure it's going to stop the guardian calling you a "link site" tho :)

on the mac stuff: even spending the £, I can't justify an upgrade from my 2 year old c2d macbook - even to myself, tho I know if I got one, I'd have to get two....

Nic, who's working on the homepage for bbc.co.uk at the moment. and yes, the irony that it has draggable regions is NOT lost on me :)

  • Island Life: The longest last time,

    Lump. Back of throat.

Thank you, David. It's a pity such outstanding writing has to be on such a unhappy topic.

  • Speaker: Database Nation,

the interesting thing on the id-to-get-a-phone thing is, at heathrow, you can get a SIM card from a vending machine.

Seriously. O2, Vodafone, Orange, etc. Put your £10 in (for £10 credit on the phone), plug it in, make calls. Easy. Totally untracable. Just BYO handset (not hard - expansys.co.uk)

  • Speaker: Database Nation,

this wouldn't be quite so bad if the UK government - and it's 1001 contractors - didn't lose millions of records of personal data, oh, every week or so.

but they do. Incompetent is being nice.

I thought about counting the CCTV cameras from home (E14 - Isle of Dogs) to work (W12 - White City) but gave up at the time I got to the tube station and I was already over 30. About the only place I'm not being watched is sitting at my desk at work. Atleast, I can't SEE the cameras (tho we could do with them to spot the theiving cleaners/night staff)

So, now we have to get the card for my wife. Fun. On top of the $1500 we paid for the spouse visa.

thanks for the interesting post :)
