Bob Mould's authorised "autobio" hopefully comes out pretty soon, I believe it's written by Michael Azzerrard who wrote "This band could be your life". Saw Grant Hart last Saturday and he was ramshackley great.

loving that adults track actually. Great to see Gary Sullivan again too.....it's a dead cool song. And thanks heaps Russell for Travelling Grave, just listened to it before starting work on what is finally a sunny week in London - a great base for kicking off the day!
Man I don't know how I could have missed that gig......I can only blame the folly of youth and lack of understanding.......on the same old school tip though, off to Tackhead tomorrow night, a rare appearance but man those guys can play! Keith LeBlanc, one of the greatest drummers around.

slightly late and the thread's possibly gone, but hell, Laneways was a delight, and far better for me in both comfort and noise quality than the BDO......I think I've definitely gone to my last one of those.
It had the quality and relaxedness of a summer series, only on a much bigger scale. I pretty much enjoyed all the acts, especially The Children's Hour (always good to see Chris Matthews playing!), Holy Fuck and Warpaint. Ariel Pink was just sh*te in my opinion though......
It's a lovely way to spend a day, and I really hope Auckland doesn't lose sight of this, or the festival - and what a great location. Very well run, and very adult too.
Now back in grey old London (a very nice two weeks back) - Russell I must apologise for the slightly drunken introduction on the aotea centre steps too.......... -
Seen the Fall in the uk a number of times now, and the last few have been really disappointing. It's a novelty when MES treats band and audience alike with disdain the first few times.......but the last few I've seen have been really shambolic from him - the band remain tight under pressure, but he just hasn't seemed to have given a shit really!
Mind you, the funniest one was May last year, when he had a broken hip....wheeled himself out in a wheelchair, sang 3 songs, hid behind the amp for 3, wheeled himself back into the dressing room and sang a couple more. Someone then gave the mic to the audience and that was it......
But as with buying records of The Fall, you swear you'll never buy another one and then funnily enough there's that new one in your collection......

Would have been keen but opted for Swans in March instead, as I can't afford both (capital: it fails me now ...). Were you the one on the thread a while ago talking about the Swans and Neubauten shows? If so, any, er, feedback?
Yep, that was indeed me......the Swans were amazing, saw them last week and also quite brutal. It's going to surprise some people I think, we've maybe not seen gigs like that for a long time. Also quite beautiful as well in a strange way....but probably the loudest I've been to for a long time.
Neubauten was the 30th anniversary shows, there was one on a Sat, one on a Sunday. I'm not overly familiar with the "classic" songs so couldn't tell you what was played (apart from Silence Is Golden), but both shows were fantastic. The Sunday night one was the darker of the two, with a couple of free noise performances as well, the Saturday being a longer performance. Most of the crowd oddly enough were European, a lot having come over just for the gig. My only complaint is that they overprice their merch far too high......£25 for a cd, £30 for a t shirt......
And coming up in December, the dead c and bardo pond on a double bill - can't wait!

btw, I'm sure no one needs to be told this but get along to Gang of Four, they're fantastic. While it's not the original rhythm section they're still very, very relevant.

While I wasn't so keen on the funky stuff it was great to hear ladi at the royal festival hall.....particularly the speaking in between!

hey damian, I've been fortunate enough to see a few of those things being based in london. I'll be interested in what people think of the Joy Division thing. I'm a massive fan, both of them and new order and to be frank, while I love all things those groups (and hopefully always will) I found it to be pretty disappointing. I've seen a couple of hooky spoken words, and been to see his new band freebass, all of which were great in their own way....also seen Bernard's new band twice - Bad Lieutenant, also really enjoyable.
But the unknown pleasures thing seemed like a step too far. I found myself wondering if it was really necessary that I see this - to be honest I was cringing a bit. Admittedly the venue wasn't great - a hot summer festival day in shoreditch - but it just seemed a bit sad really.
Just my opinion of course, as I said, I'd be interested in what people think when he plays back home. It's great so many good bands go through there, kudos to the promoters, particularly mystery girl and the other feller (can't remember the name of his company) matt c.
On a final note - everyone should go and see the fall. He's pretty incoherent these days, but it's always worth it, even if it's just to see how badly he treats his band!
