Earthquakes start somewhere and then trigger faults in other directions. So while the first earthquake was in north Canterbury the energy release quickly travelled north as this youtube simulation shows.

I also hate 'social investment' and fear we will hear more next year of the new PM's pet policy to privatise or delegate social services and share personal details of clients with whatever government agency or politician wants them.
