  • Hard News: Going Social, in reply to andrea quin,

He didn't state it that clearly, but obviously he means that while you can make a link, the link is useless to those without itunes software. All those people who bought beatles downloads necessarily had the software, no?

What Sir Tim misses (and I'm not ragging on him - full respeck!) is that the web is not the Internet, and the Internet has always been balkanized technologically, back to the days of gopher. The web is a sizable chunk of it, but it's difficult to get around without a browser, no?

The wubwubwub has been around for 17 years, the Internet for quite a bit longer. If we're still using http in another 17 years, I'll be ripping my 3d, tactile holographic display (with SmellOVision![tm]) from my anti-grav zimmer frame and hurling it into the river. But I bet we're still using the net.

And Caribou Barbie asks why Assange isn’t being hunted down like Al Quaeda

    1. She's probably confused with George Quaeda, Al's younger brother

    2. And we know how well that's going!

Whatever you may think of Wikileaks, and I'm not convinced that it's an unalloyed blessing myself, I'd rather live in a world where they can operate than one they can't.

  • Hard News: Wikileaks: The Cable Guys, in reply to Jason Kemp,

Privately everyone accepts he is volatile and maybe not rational but realistically they have nice beaches and we still want to go there on holidays etc. so we need to be more circumspect and diplomatic in public.

I don't, actually. I went once in the late 90's, and stayed in a resort, all very nice. But on the way, the taxi drove through a couple of the towns, and a few villages. Once you could see past the grinding poverty and the steel bars on every shop window (in that economic climate, you don't spend money on steel bars unless you really need them), it was the casual racism towards anyone who wasn't Fijian that got to me. I won't be back, and I won't be buying anything that I know is Fijian, even if they do get rid of the "interim Prime Minister" and his uniformed gang.

"Emboffs" is a lovely term, though. I must remember use it next time I'm arguing copyright treaties with MFAT

  • Hard News: Moving targets, in reply to Dismal Soyanz,

The RA has the authority to cut the current salary of an MP. It cannot retroactively cut the salary and demand the MP pays it back.

No-one said it did. You are the only person who has raised this as a concept for discussion. You are correct - the RA is irrelevant with regard to perks. So why are you even talking about it?

But you are claiming that MPs are entitled to historic perks because of some contractual relationship that only you can see. In small concise words: THERE IS NO CONTRACT This has been stated by people who are paid to know these things (cf McGee) yet your opinion is held (by you) to trump their considerations.

You are either a fool or are working by a strategy of talking absolute shit until everyone gets tired of you and walks away, whereupon you claim victory.

Done with you, sir, that I am.

  • Hard News: Moving targets, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

No, no, snidely bitching the Speaker is a national sport. Didn't you get the memo?

You're right that they all play this game but that doesn't mean you can't bitch the incumbents. Were it a Labour govt, you'd be doing just as much bitching (oh, yes you would - if you're going to decry hypocrisy, like charity you start at home). We all bitch the ones we're opposed to - the trick is to be consistent.

Phil's talking about Pansy Wong's screwup - so he's bitching out the incumbents who have indeed seemed quite relaxed (Smith more than Key, I'll grant you) about her transgressions, and Key only started to tense up when he realised that public sentiment was not with Wong, or any MP, on this.

Please stop making out that everyone's a hypocrite excpet you. It really doesn't add to the discussion.

Perhaps, but it doesn't invalidate Phil's point.
