  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

I don't know any Maori personally who feel any bond to the Treaty whatsoever, and I know quite a few.

    Are you serious?

My point being that speculation based on limited information with an emotive topic necessarily stirs up a distracting number of ideologically inflected reflections.

Nicely put. I will be keeping my bite-sized opinion to myself until there is more information. The nature of these kind of forums is that it is hard to have a sustained conversation/discussion and the news cycle just moves on to the next thing. I wonder if we will still be talking/thinking about this in two weeks time. I kind of hope so, regardless of what comes out on Friday. I like to find such chunky (and well punctuated for that matter) blessays in the middle of a thread. Especially when they adopt a tone (provocative or otherwise) not otherwise heard around here.
I have just finished reading an article in White Fungus magazine about Rua Kenana and the Siege of Maungapohatu. The history of Tuhoe is one of the many things I am mostly ignorant about and it seems like something historic is happening now. Swarming over the little tit-bits of partially digested information makes me feel more than a little nauseous.
Maybe I have a weak stomach.

  • Hard News: Copyright Abuse,

Can't remember the titles of all the Neil Gaiman comics I have read but I did read one featuring a lesbian couple. It was great I thought. When writers manage to succeed at getting us anywhere like close to the experience of another person it is magic. A reminder to exercise our own capacity for empathy.

Thanks Craig, perhaps I am better cut out to be an activist than hang around in a place which has more than its fair share of journalists and pedants.

I have been picking up Craig Ranapia's lovely turn of phrase but unfortunately not his impressive spelling under pressure ; )

Heh... I'm sure YouTube would say they're enhancing the interactivity of the YouTube experience in response to feedback from the user community.

    I am sure they would ; )
but I still like my way better.

Contraire dick is just a given, but of course. See that shows that you know the medium (if that is the right term?) unlike whoever had the bright idea of utilising youtube for political broadcasts. Moderating people who are not even up to the standards of arse hattery that a 13 year old can muster up........
That makes you look like an very naff dick.

Robyn that is interesting. Kind of like a "hey dick, shut up" comment moderation system.

  • Hard News: Copyright Abuse,

Just because there is a lot of bullshit in the comments section of youtube doesn't really take away from Damion's point.

And I understand anyone who uploads video to YouTube has to the option of disabling comments entirely - would that also be 'crushing speech'?

But they didn't turn them off so that is not really the point either, I don't think that many people here would disagree that on your own site you can moderate how you see fit and no-one has an inalienable human right to post comments. The point seems to be if you try to use social media for political purposes and fling the door of the comments section wide open (which on youtube is a bit nuts for the reasons you have stated) you will look like a jackarse if you "moderate" those who disagree with you in this manner.
If just looks naff. You would think with the number of people who seem to be enrolled in "Digital Media" type courses these days that someone would be able to give some good advise.

  • Cracker: Shut 'em Down,

Personally I would have been far more inclined to ban the obsequious toad who posted comments like "I'm hoping for something bold, brave and innovative like the [National Party's] roading policy."

    And

Have you watched John Keys speech on roading policy? The video is 30 minutes long but I think it's well worth watching.

Oh how I laughed! Well worth the 4 minutes of my life to read this.
