Can't find any link for video of DC's story on the linked-to Close Up page.
    A little help, please?

  • Cracker: See More on 3,

I regularly watch both 1 and 3 news (I think generally they're both very good and we are well served) but Prime News really is the poor cousin.

    IMHO,
I regularly watch both 1 and 3 news. Here's my take: 3news has gotten more and more sloppy - Duncan Garner is getting way too opinionated, for one; the graphics guy/team can neither spell nor construct decent images; almost everything by Cliff Joiner - and they've definitely loosened the reigns on their previously high editorial standards. One News (incl. Holmes / Wood / Sainsbury) has, for many years been at the front lines of the dumbing-down of NZ media and culture. It's THE leading former of opinions amongst "mainstream" New Zealand, so it's no suprise to me how ignorant and simplistic the opinions of so many people seem to be.

The US has all the money in world and their "news" programmes are (with a few notable exceptions) a disaster at the moment. They've mostly all gone Foxy to a greater or lesser extent, which, I suppose, they are economically obliged to do. Nevertheless, the results for the country have been catastrophic. It's a (very) basic rule of thumb that we're about a decade behind the US in matters media, so I believe there's a lesson to be learned by New Zealand; sowing seeds of ignorance will come back to bite you, if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor. What Alejandro Jodorowsky said about Art applies to News as well: "If Art is not a medicine for society, it is a poison".

Note: Damian, I appreciate that you may not want to, or be able to, get into a debate on this. Non-response to these points won't be taken as acceptance of such. I'm just dropping an opinion; that's all. :)

PS. Prime News is a bit cheap, sure. But I'll always remember that they were the *only* one to run the story about the Weekend Herald guy allegedly threatening to expose Debbie Gerbich after she gave her police sex tape story exclusively to Sunday News, a couple of months ago. She apparently declined to play ball, NZH named her and trashed her in a story which I saw as blatant payback. I'm not saying it's related but now she's been "found dead in her home", with friends saying that she was "devastated" by having her anonymity blown. One News and 3 News both covered the initial Sunday News police sex tape story, but both ignored completely the Weekend Herald scandal which followed. Prime News First At 5:30 ran a very good story on it.

For international news via TV I'll stick with BBC, Al Jazeera, DW, and even that French one. For local news, I don't know where to go.

Without wishing to rain on you parade...

One News' endless promotion of "Dancing Wth The Stars" was more gratutitous, if you ask me. Not sexually so, but in terms of painting promotion as news.

Yes, TV3's been dropping the ball this year in terms of news quality - no doubt - but One News is still worse, I think.

  • Random Play: Music to my ears,

I know some people who use rollie cigarette filters, which, if you're a rollie smoker, are pretty handy.

Make sure you're packing a set of keys.

  • Cracker: Is there a Sub in the City?,

I suspect that someone at the Herald just wanted a hot blonde face on the front page, and then decided some post hoc reason for it.

It would also appear that [subs] are voicing their disquiet by failing to correct basic typos in 'Blonde at the Bar' copy.

    How can you tell? ;)

If this quote from Joanna is even half accurate, she's in the wrong game: "__Nothing annoys me more than dickheads who feel it is their right to publicly pass judgement on me.__"

Early days yet, but if the comments section becomes half as bad as "Your View", the poor woman will have a breakdown before long. This time I'm not being funny; I only hope she can come out the other end of this without a deep distaste for the whole industry. It's not just bars that are meat markets, you know.

  • Hard News: Friday night road warrior,

It's a bit like how a single car crash "shows that New Zealanders just aren't getting the message to slow down" as one officer opined on the 6 o'clock news the other night.

...so then, wouldn't that mean, in fact, that each radio station DOES in fact reflect the tastes of the demographic they want to attract?

That's true, but the tastes they reflect were formed primarily by available radio options in the first place, is what I'm saying.

It goes both ways, sure, but (all else being equal) what gets put on high rotate today is more likely to be to people's tastes a year from now, than what today gets no radio presence at all.

Actually, that may not be quite right. I withdraw. Nevertheless, I think radio forms tastes more than it reflects tastes.
