How about a larger bureaucracy, minimum elected reps, & all votes by referendum? A true Democracy, power directly to the people. The bureaucracy would be there to inform the public on the issues to be voted on.
That's one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

I agree that SiCKO is pitched at the right level. You're talking about a country where, for example, adult "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" contestants are unable to correctly answer such questions as:
"What country shares the longest border with the US?"
"What is the name of the closest star to Earth?"
"How many decades are there in two millennia?"
Not to mention that most of them still believe that Sadam Hussein perpetrated 9/11, and all that stuff about Jesus.
In the end, SiCKO doesn't really rate for me (except for the Cuban hospital and fire station sequences), but it has to be considered in the light of the effect it will have on American viewers/consumers.
International Observer is right. For documantaries for grown-ups, Adam Curtis is where it's at. Check out:
"The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear" (3 hours, Islamic fundamentalism; American Neoconservatism; political manipulation of the fear of terrorism, 1940's - present) and
"The Century of the Self (4 hours, Freud; Psychoanalysis; "Public Relations"; corporate phychological manipulation; repression of- vs. actualisation of the unconscious self, 1920s - present).
Both, and probably others, are available, free and apparently legal, here, and well worth your time.

Also having just relocated to London, I have found the trick is to stick to straight espresso. Don`t let them muck it up with milk, as they froth it to a bubble-bath consistency...
Also, according to my mate, they use the steamer and the jug not only for frothing milk but also for making some kind of instant scrambled eggs, and they don't clean it in between, so the steamer arm always has a big eggy glob on the end of it.

I well remember the day [...] my attention kept being drawn to some massive tickertape parade being played out on the overhead televisions.
So do I. My girlfriend and I were walking down Queen st. shortly afterwards. We put on German accents and talked loudly about how filthy the street was and that we'd been led to believe that New Zealand was a clean country, much to apparent horror of many bystanders.

Have TV3 killed the link to "The dangers of poppy seeds" video? Unlike other vids, it just links to the homepage at present.

And it appears to have sprung a leak.

Deal Or No Deal footage leads 3 News tonight
Yet another sleazy story from 3's schadenfreude specialist, Kate Lynch. Poor girl; dragged through the top of the 6 o'clock news over a possession charge, just because her step-father is allegedly famous, or because she was on Deal Or No Deal, or... something. That story was complete trash. Running it first was a tragically cynical move.
And would someone please explain to Kate Lynch the difference between "refuse" and "decline"?
