Comparing an author to a painter would only be valid if authors made money from their original manuscripts and the printing press didn't exist.
A-ha! And so it begins ... the argument over which artist deserves a rolyalty and which doesn't. So if a painter paints an original canvas s/he gets a royalty, but if a painter produces prints ofthat artwork they don't? What if they produce "signed, numbered, limited edition prints"?? And I guess art photographers will get nothing too if they run off more than one copy.

"This thread needs to go on forever, as a live-bloggin' record of shabby TV news practices."
I'm with you on this one 3410!
BTW - does anyone know what Helen Clark did for 9 hours on the water waiting for the wind to blow? I mean, she may may be the consumate politician but crikey, what chit chat is there left to say after the first two hours? "And then one time, at Band Camp, ..."
I feel sorry for the sailors too, since they can normally pass the time with a sing-song: "The Captain's wife was Mabel, ..."

well, this thread is dead, innit?

The Australian forces on the other hand seem to have a history, and reputation, for buying hardware they don't need to counter enemies that don't exist simply because the US has it on offer. The F-35s are a perfect example.
They also have a reputation for buying into fights they don't need to be involved in, simply because the US has it on offer.

I sold a work of art in Mt Eden 3 years ago for half a million. Now its worth $700k. I'm all in favour of a 5% going back to the original artist and I hope it's back dated (as long as I don't have to share it with the builder or architect)

television news is a soap opera that serves to reinforce the viewers' understanding of the world.
has anyone noticed that they always have experts walking past or towards the camera before they're interviewed.I cringed last week during 3 News' reporting of the 10 y.o. who escaped being dragged into a car. Not only did they interview the brave girl (fine, I suppose) they also got her to 're-enact' the attempted abduction ie camera following girl from behind, sudden rush forward, grey camera effect, etc. Having recorded the news I was able to double check, and no they hadn't used an actor. CREEPY! So yes, I guess the news is 'drama' now.
Apart from the obvious cost savings in padding out your broadcast with other people's footage, perhaps some smart person knows that there are lots of Kiwi expats in Oz?
Whilst they may claim it's the latter I'm sure it's more the former ie cheap padding. I used Wollomoolloo purely as an example, we're also treated to stories from the more far flung parts of Australia that have zero relevance.

This is why when you go on holiday out of range of the news, and then come back, it's hard to "get into", just as if you had missed a couple of months of your favourite soap.
Not quite, when I come back from OS I'm always asking the taxi driver on the way home from the airport what the 'news' has been while I'm away. That's because when I go on holiday I don't go online (much) and the rest of the world do not cover NZ (Shrek excepted). Actually one of my bugbears is why TV1 & TV3 show so much Aussie news on our bulletins. A shooting in Wollomooloo has sod all to do with us. I've spent enough time in Oz to know they don't show one iota of NZ news on their channels - unless its derogatory to kiwis.
when I worked in advertising (long sigh of futility), we used the BNF (babies need food) principle (the only one we had really) to filter client product lies, I mean puffery, for example, Rinso Cleans! Well one would hope
Gotta love advertising! Much joy can be found reading the real estate section in your newspaper. Vendor Says Sell! Really? So he's not spending $5+k on marketing just to see, y'know, what the property is worth??

Who believes that their DRM embedded original files are going to work in five years time let alone two?
Excellent point! Reminds me of how we all had to pay again when we switched from vinyl to CD's. At least then we were paying (albeit well above true cost) for a physical, manufactured product. I shudder to think what will happen in the future when our 'old' digital downloads won't play on the latest output device and we're asked to download (and pay) again.
Hmmmm ..... actually .... isn't this already happening with PS3? .... original Playstation games won't play on the new console??

Nobody Important, so I assume you would consider Sue Bradford was always blameless like the Timaru Lady? Would you consider spitting in a police officer's face self defense?
I would consider it self defence if I was spitting at a Policeman coming towards me in a threatening manner whilst both my arms were pinned by two other Policemen.
I was trying to be funny, and hoped my use of arrrr would indicate that. My reply was in response to what I thought was a loaded question:Is Bradford as violent a person as she is because she received the odd smack as a child or would she be worse if she never received a smack as all?
I don't know whether Bradford is violent or not, but I certainly wouldn't base an opinion on that simply from what I saw on the TV news last century. Has she been violent to you Chuck?
