If Robertson was a lumberjack who got a degree whilst chopping down trees and playing rugby it wouldn’t matter to anyone he happened to be gay.

Also, if he was those two things, he'd likely be pretty solidly in the closest, NZ rugby and manual labour culture not known for being incredibly accepting of such things.

Grant played pretty decent level rugby in high school if that helps. I can't comment on his tree chopping abilities but I'd imagine he fails that test.

Give the Labour party the really big shake up it needs. It’s going to take a lot to stop me from drifting to Greens next election.

I don't think that's a problem for Labour - people leaving Labour to vote Green is OK, as they're coalition partners next government. Likely left voters not voting is a problem, people leaving Labour to vote NZ First, Peter Dunne, or National/Act is a problem.

Indeed, no doubt there's smart people in both Labour and Greens figuring out how best to position both parties to cover the spectrum so that they pick up as many potential voters as possible. Labour probably needs to be perceived (real or not) to have a leg solidly in the centre as that's where the swing is.

And who next? Bryce Edwards thinks Cunliffe / Robertson is “pre-determined.” Sounds reasonable?

I don't know Cunliffe, but I think right now Labour needs someone who can take on Key head on - in the house and in debates/TV. Robertson could do that, there's a strong hint of Lange in him in several ways.

  • Speaker: Naked Inside the Off-Ramp,

There was no ambiguity in the 2003 law. The GCSB could not spy on NZers, but it could render assistance to police etc. Which is fine, these are not inconsistent statements. This just means that the GCSB (if it followed its legislation) could not spy on NZers in the course of rendering assistance to the police, etc. So, if the police were, say, trying to locate French secret service agents, or the members of an international drug cartel, then the GCSB would be eligible to help. On the other hand, if the police were trying to locate, say, an escaped Mongrel mob associate, or a large German with NZ residency, then the GCSB are not eligible to help. It was pretty simple stuff.

That's my reading of it as well. I feel that any other interpretation is looking at it through 2013-PR'd-to-death-by-National eyes.

We do have 88 illegal spying incidents by the GCSB according to the report after all. Is that report wrong?

But Greens, Mana and Maori don't like the GCSB or SIS and are unlikely to vote for the likley outcome of any inquiry that isn't stacked in their favour (and that shouldn't happen).

I'd imagine that after horsetrading post-review, they'll vote for it if it improves the GCSB in the way they want it. Why would they vote against a bill that pushes the GCSB in the direction that they believe it should go, as part of a coalition government?

Right wing Labour faction of Robertson et al will push for a coalition with National to set us back on the centre-right path of Helen Clark

I don't think you know Grant Robertson very well.

And Labour's just announced policy to restrict property sales to non-residents so the chances of them desperately selling it to them looks slim at present.

Newmarket today was nests and eggs

Nora, if that's a reflection, why can't I find the camera (and photographer?) in it? *puzzled*

No, just simply that I’ll see something on TV I wouldn’t mind watching, from the start, but since I didn’t record it already, and will probably forget to watch again in 50 minutes on +1, I’ll just record the +1.

The feature on mysky where you can hit record halfway through a show, and as long as your mysky has been on that channel (regardless of whether your tv was on etc) since the show started it records the whole thing is a goodie.

But what Chch had was Tony Peake, who was running the UBS record store and using their academic exception to by-pass Muldoon's restrictions. Used to get Tony to send up parcels of stuff that we couldn't dream of getting in Auckland.

My partner left school in... 77? and got a job in Beggs in Dunedin (still open, but only doing instruments now I believe) and was somehow bringing new music from the UK - not sure how. She was all in the punk scene so was selling it to friends and bandmates.

Is the rain damage a concern? I’m sure one or two wouldn’t be a worry, but a cardboard building not being water tight might be considered, um, problematic?

Looking at the news story they were saying it was damage from before the roof was put over the top?
