Interesting thought re "having it too easy makes for shallowness." Think of those beautiful children who have a private school background and mix with the right people and get the best of material stuff. Parents believe that they are giving these kids the best start that they can. Adversity sharpens the awareness.
I am anti-religion but read things that are spiritual in what Emma writes, in the nicest possible way.

  • Hard News: Mediocrity Watch,

It is always interesting to see the huge varity of spiders when accidentally or otherwise breaking open a mason bees nest.

Cindy: Interesting that about the 18 degrees.(My Brother-in-law is a salmon expert and says that if the river water temp is above 17 degrees the salmon won't run so go home!)
Once when in the bush at Pelorus late in the afternoon the cicadas suddenly and abruptly just stooped singing. Dead silence for about 10 minutes then slowly a few started up again. I wonder if your bit about the temperature needing to be above 18 degrees was the answer. Mmmm?

  • Hard News: Mediocrity Watch,

Hilary: Imagine a school being asked to take on special needs kids or those who have been in trouble with previous schools or with the law. Imagine the lobbying within a school for the good kids with good skills and attitudes and the dumping of the less desirable. Imagine the enthusiasm for teachers who have a choice between a good school (whatever that is) and a bad school. Imagine the jealous guarding of successes and fresh ideas by teachers wishing to preserve their advantage over others. Choice? Vouchers? Politicians? Ugh!

Just what are PCR's? I have an image of solemn people prostrate in front of some deeply religious icon, intoning inunintelligible tongues. So What are they?

Is Madison real? Looks very much like a computer generated fantasy to me.
It is strange how to "Make a Stupid law" resonates. When put up against how Collins, Ryall, Key, Sainsbury, have so far handled issues like boy racers, parole, sentencing makes me think that they are working from Emma's very true script. Does Emma collect a bonus for each "issue" that follows her plan?

  • Hard News: Away for the Weekend,

It is interesting to ask casually, "How many murders are committed in NZ each year?"
Usual answer is in the hundreds. 150? 300?
    Answer between 50 and 60.
Why do people think that there are far more than there are? Media preoccupation. Especially accenting the non-European ones. Yet the number of European children killed by adults is significantly greater than those by polynesian.
Therefore casual question. "Who is killing the little kids most?"

Jolissa. Start making a decision on what sort of car you think he/they will be driving. Be terrified at the thought because it will be tomorrow or will seem like it.
When one of my boys was nearly three, I happened to video a conversation (mostly his) about castles and castle weapons and defence systems. Its only three and a half minutes long but priceless. Thanks for the reminder.

I think it would be good to hear from Mrs Haywood. Does she groan, chuckle, moan, or cry?
