The issue is then that people simply can't afford to pay the rental price.
Only to get worse, with a Westpac economist noting that in Westpac's view landlords should be upping rents 36% over the next 5 years to compensate landlords for expected lower capital gains. But, said economist added, that's OK, because wages are expected to go up an average of 5% pa.
The phrase 'rack-renting' could come into some currency locally.

I could buy a lodge in the Japan Alps or a decent villa in Argentina for a lower price ticket than a suburban weatherboard in NZ.
Hell, I could buy a small apartment in Paris for the price of apartments in Oriental Bay. And that's inner city Paris, not some shonky estate on the fringe.

I figure on balance I'm so far ahead of most folks by that one simple act that I can afford to lose a little Karma by eating some Tuna
Tuna becoming extinct is related only to how much tuna people eat, not anything else.

So I can see why Sara wants to comment on the similarities, and to wonder why it is that in one case, the general NZ public seems to think that the exercise of police power was inappropriate (to say the least), but in the other, the exercise of police power seems to be accepted.
Conversely, I can't see why people can rush to cry, "Guilty, even if the cops didn't get him", while chanting "LalalalalalalaIseenoevidencehere" for others.

tight-fisted ... onanists
Tell me that wasn't intentional, Craig.
(What do you get a tight-fisted onanist? Some sort of soothing cream for the rubbed-raw bits, I guess)

Romeny: The candidate who's declared a war on the secular state. It's only religious fascism when Muslims want it, I guess.

So Pita Sharples is in favour of adults gang-banging children? That's interesting in light of his professed outrage about Maori child abuse stats earlier this year.

So if we can't appoint past losers, what would we appoint Robbie Deans for? He sure as hell wasn't winning any world cups in 2003.

But I'm also boggled as to why the media seems to fixate on Second Life so much more than any other MMORPG.
I dunno. Perhaps it's not as full of the kind of dickwits that infect most MMORPGs.
My drug of choice (Eve) has such charmers as the Alliance that decided to name all their space stations after Nazi death camps and refer to themselves and their allies as the "Rapetrain Coalition". Only this week the head of my group had someone track down his real life identify, and start spamming chat with pics of his daughter and charming messages about having sex with her.
The daughter in question is 2. Eve is supposedly one of the more grown-up and less toxic multiplayer games.

Excuse me? I haven't seen anything on these pages that indicates that anyone of us would not condemn murder.
Russell has posed, more than once, questions asking whether people would condemn the plans being discussed if they were accurate. I have yet to see responses from the people he's posed them to that weren't big fat circumlocutions or just ignoring them.
It is exactly that kind of bullshit escalation that gets us into more and more trouble.
Look in the mirror, then. I'm not the one swearing at people while making things up about cavity searches and pronouncements such as:
Secondly, I am not inclined to doubt complaints of police misconduct in this context.
Presumption of innocence, huh? I guess it applies only to some.
