A really good post, Russell. It seems peculiar that people want objective measuring, yet when it can be shown objectively that such measuring does not work, those people will stick to their dogma. Much the same has happened in the MMR 'debate' and other challenges to science: feelings trump facts.

Who owns shared culture?
Culture, by definition, is shared; some of it also is owned.

And with one sweep, for better or worse, you've just wiped out entertainment industry as such....
And I am the one who believes in copyright; funny old world, isn't it? It is just that copyright exists to reward and protect creators. The Larrikins did not create the work and they did not suffer any loss by its use. They didn't so much as hear it; somebody else told them. They have no grievance. They are worse than tax farmers.
-
The Down Under case is especially galling because the Larrikins did not create the copied work, they bought the rights to it. Had Doug and Dinsdale Larrikin sat down and composed their ode to the Kookaburra, one might have some sympathy. But no, they bought the rights, that is all.
I do not see why copyright should be transferable. The rights should belong to the creator and to the creator's heirs, for a reasonable time. They should not be a commodity.

It was a mid-life crisis for Sir Miles. He now regrets it.

I hope to discuss the question as to whether Sir Miles Warren is a reptilian shape-shifter in my PhD thesis; but Ifear the Illuminati won't let me.

Warren and Mahoney?

I stayed away from Laneway, because I thought it might be an open-air Black Hole of Calcutta, with bonus queues. It seems I was right.

Having said that, I do feel that Jew-hating adds such an air of distinction to a conspiracy theory, don't you?
The phrase Jewish conspiracy gives me an image of men in homburg hats and heavy coats with astrakhan collars, clustered together and talking in hushed tones.

Apropos, I was standing in the queue at the Postshop and found a copy of Investigate to hand. I was struck by the photo of the Amsterdam Coffee Shop Fantasio. In fact, Fantasio is a music venue, run by the state. The photo looks as if it were made in the 60s, unless this Retro thing has got out of hand.
Then there were the stock photos, of two blokes fighting and of a gun being held to a kid's head. It is non-specific outrage: they must buy these images by the gross and drop them into stories whenever they are needed.
Then there was the bar-chart, which shows that pot is not as bad as the article argues; it is worse than its fans would have us believe, but better than its enemies say. It kinda sorta undermined the article.
