  • Hard News: You've gotta hand it to Steve,

    I agree with amalmac!

It's hard to argue against what he said, but I'm guessing Mr Grigg can enlighten us as to the thinking of record retaillers (he sold enough records thru them). I'm guessing its the record companies, not the retaillers that are the problem.

Kinda reminds me of Alan Shore's closing arguments in Boston Legal the other night visavis The Dept of Homeland Security's inability to determine one Denny Crane (US citizen) from one Daniel Crane (Canadian citizen) who is on the No-Fly list.

I believe the solution he offered was to employ someone named Steve

am I on the NO-FLY list?

  • Hard News: On receipt of a not-so-nastygram,

It seems they haven't grasped the difference between me hosting content and me linking to content...

Of course they grasped the difference, they're not stupid. They just wanted to see how stupid you were ie can you be intimidated by their 'threat' of action. Yay you for not buckling immediately. Lawyers know that some people will wet their pants upon reciept of an embossed letterhead.

Re the .gov vs .govt etc question -- okay, this is tangential but not completely off-topic -- I think the international internet community missed a huge chance when they didn't take the opportunity to move all sex sites off www. and onto xxx.

Pornographers argued they were a 'legal' enterprise with zillions of consumers (no argument there) but moving them to xxx. would not have stopped them trading surely? It certainly would have made it easier for parents/schools to block -- not a bad thing surely?

  • Hard News: Awful in more than one way,

You just knew that Instapundit and Michelle Malkin would respond to the Virginia Tech massacre by implying that it wouldn't have happened if VTech hadn't been a gun-free campus, but you'd think they might have been able to wait more than a couple of hours after the deaths to start the politicking.

Yeah, funny how it's 'okay' for the wingnuts to immediately say that this massacre proves the case for more gun freedom; and yet godforbid anyone from the left should state the obvious: how bogus is the WAR ON TERROR when ONE person can walk into ONE school and kill 30 people within minutes??

Bushco has spent billions trying to "protect Americans from terrorist attack on American soil", and yet the simple truth is that if Al Quaeda really wanted to they could just send out a dozen martyrs armed with legally purchased and constitutionally protected weapons to inflict a dozen VT's.

  • Hard News: Art and the Big Guy,

Bollocks. I love writing. I love it more when I get paid.

[Eric B]: Yo Rakim, what's up?
[Rakim]: Yo, I'm doing the knowledge, E., I'm trying to get paid in full
[E]: Well, check this out, since Nobry Walters is our agency, right?
    [R]: True
[E]: Kara Lewis is our agent
    [R]: Word up
[E]: Zakia/4th & Broadway is our record company
    [R]: Indeed
[E]: Okay, so who we rollin with?
    [R]: We rollin with Rush
[E]: Of Rushtown Management. Check this out, since we talking over
this def beat that I put together, I wanna hear some of them
def rhymes, know what I'm sayin? And together, we can get
    paid in full...

    [Rakim]
    Thinkin of a master plan
Cuz ain't nuthin but sweat inside my hand
So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent
So I dig deeper but still comin up with lint
So I start my mission- leave my residence
Thinkin how could I get some dead presidents
I need money, I used to be a stick-up kid
So I think of all the devious things I did
I used to roll up, this is a hold up, ain't nuthin funny
Stop smiling, be still, don't nuthin move but the money
But now I learned to earn cos I'm righteous
I feel great! so maybe I might just
    Search for a 9 to 5, if I strive
    Then maybe I'll stay alive
So I walk up the street whistlin this
Feelin out of place cos, man, do I miss
A pen and a paper, a stereo, a tape of
Me and Eric B, and a nice big plate of
Fish, which is my favorite dish
But without no money it's still a wish
Cos I don't like to dream about gettin paid
So I dig into the books of the rhymes that I made
To now test to see if I got pull
Hit the studio, cos I'm paid in full

  • Hard News: Art and the Big Guy,

Finally, even though a piece of graphic art such a a painting or drawing has been purchased the copyright belongs to the artist unless there is a written waiver of that right by the artist.

Interesting, because both Wedding and "boudoir" photographers have clauses asserting their copyright despite you commissioning them to take the pictures. I thought it was just a rort to get you to buy all the prints through them, but I see what cunning bastards they are now ...

  • Hard News: Awful in more than one way,

This is from the story I was referring to in my post above:

Every tragedy now seems accompanied by an outpouring of grief and solidarity on the Internet — a torrent of news, rumor, photos, cellphone videos and instant opinion. So was the case Monday, as the death toll climbed to 33.

For many college students, this could become their defining tragedy. Most were only in grade school or middle school during the Columbine High School massacres of 1999 and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks two years later.

You can link to it here: LA Times

Gee - I wonder what today's grade schoolers can look forward to?

[correction - I should have reread more carefully before my earlier post. It says the Californian student had friends at VT]

  • Freak Circus (with Dancing),

Why anybody would appear on such a television programme is a mystery to me.

Why anybody would blog on such a television programme is a mystery to me. I stopped in to see why but skipped to the end after the wart story (that was interesting) cos you lost me.

But each to their own I s'pose. I have zero interest in DWTS yet I'm a sucker for The Aprentice -- altho' my interest is more in watching how the producers/editors try to manipulate the audience. Anyone notice how last nights show had constant 'cut-aways' to the fat guy eating?

Nay, he was not merely 'eating' he was stuffing his big fat mouth!! I guess he won't be long for the chop.

  • Hard News: Awful in more than one way,

Elsewhere on the internets, some news organisations got the wrong armed-to-the-teeth Asian guy, [link]

Thanks for the link RB, quite a fascinating blog that Wrong Asian Guy keeps actually. I PREDICT he will actually become a guest contributor on Fox News. They'll get him on The O'reilly Factor, have a bit of a 'chuckle' about him being mistaken by the media (always the media in general ie not just Fox) and then encourage him to share his gun lovin' pro republican thoughts.

Also, VTech has highly-wired students who do stuff like setting up survivor clearing houses on Facebook

I was puzzled to read on one website a news outlet writing up a story about a mother in Maryland who rang her daughter at California University to tell her about the massacre. So daughter went to Facebook to find out who was dead and who survived. Never once did the story explain why - it was all "wow! new technology angle in age old story of gun killings"

Also, if anyone needs a humour break then scroll back to RB's YouTube vid - definately worth the 9 minute watch

  • Hard News: Biting back at Bill,

Interesting how quickly the VT shooters status as an immigrant has been pushed to the front of the news stories.
    [and]

Interesting - online, the updated Herald story says he arrived in the US 15 years ago. In the print edition, it says he arrived last month...

Yup - the TV bulletins yesterday were initially reporting he was a Chinese student from Beijing!! Turns out he's South Korean!

Australia's Today Show (broadcast mornings on Prime) yesterday crossed live to an Aussie student attending Virginia Tech. According to her she got an email in the morning say there had been a shooting and that classes were cancelled. And yet the news reports were carrying the story that 'the school authorities' were being criticised for allowing classes to continue. Hmmm, I wonder if Today checked their source before putting her to air?
