  • Random Play: The Lion Doesn't Sleep Tonight,

As a member of the church of scientology, I believe that Tom Cruise will think and say what he's damn well told.

That is a curiously ambiguous sentence.

He, he, I thought that too.

Ben, Craig: I applaud having at the Herald. I just don't think we should buy into the very prejudice they play on.

I do take your point too, but there are a lot of things that could be complained about in my opinion this one just makes an easy target because it is so sloppy. This part is enough for me:

he headline of a Thursday 25th, New Zealand Herald article (in their “Crime Story” section) describes Omar Hamed as an “alleged terrorist” (Alleged terrorist's name revealed) despite the fact that he faces no charges under the Suppression of Terrorism Act, merely “three charges of illegal possession of a firearm.”

Also being sloppy about his background is relevant because of people's prejudices. But I do very clearly see the point you are making.

And I'd prefer to make it clear that I'd rather patronise media outlets - and their advertisers - who give a fresh turd what a terrorist is.

I am motivated enough to complain about this too. It will be the second time ever.

    Truly disgraceful bullshit.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

Especially for those currently in prison awaiting (for at least six months, it seems) the chance to even answer the charges against them.

How do you know it will be six months? Is this normal? Will this mean that because it is "before the courts" no information will be forthcoming except as leaks and fucking shoddy journalism as described above for the next six months?

I apologise to all if I occasionally sound a bit cranky, it is the Socratic way to provoke to extremes, and I am a huffy jaded new fogey cynic.

I myself am often crotchety it's only to be expected. I like your contributions myself.
As far as Socrates goes; fuck the Socratic method I say. Tedious and kind of dishonest. Oh and patronising (not you, the Socratic method).

Weird. I thought you wrote "I am an outtie", and I thought "Why is she talking about her belly button?"

That would have been preeety random. I wasn't sure how one spells "outtie".

Right, I'm leaving "the thread that would not die" before someone starts quoting Nietzche aphorisms. Auf Wiedersehn - it's been lovely as always.

If that happens I am outtie

There is no incompatability between supporting someone's right to attempt to transform society and laughing (or sneering) at their excesses.

Yes that is true. For me at the moment it is a matter of emphasis, I am focused on the lack of real information. That just bothers me more right now than these kinds of discussions. (Athough I enjoy them on some level or I wouldn't be here obviously)

As fun as it may or may not be to debate the merits of Anarchism I think it is a dry exercise. We need to pay more than just lip service to peoples right to challenge or even (shock horror!) transform the society we live in. Not that I am advocating violence, just suggesting we sneer at radical passionately involved people at our peril.

    relatively innocuous police responses

Have to agree to disagree there unless some seriously damning information is released in a reasonable timeframe as to why all 17 of them should be legitimately in custody.

For someone who's into democratic government you don't seem too into the values that maintain it.

    Yep.

Time will tell. That is about as much faith as I have in the process.
