We managed to get our (newish) Muslim in-law along for his first Kiwi Xmas lnch by pointing out to him a New Zealand Christmas is a completely secular event devoid of any religious meaning, unless the consumption of eleven different living creatures from bivalves to hooved ungulates (no roast pork or bacon or ham though but I can chomp on piggies the other 364 days of the year) is a heroic worship of consumption.
Eating was more or less continuous from 11am to 4pm.
I finished the day at 9.30pm by scoffing verily the last of my sister's beautiful old-fashioned trifle - if I had left it for the morning one of my greedy siblings would surely have snaffled it for breakfast - bliss.

Yes, now is the time to keep an eye on and take the time with your loved ones. As someone who suddenly a lost a close friend on new year's day a few yeas ago, I can tell you the biggest regret has always been what wasn't said in the assumption that you could always tell them tomorrow, next week, or next year.
So if you have had the hard fortune to lose someone very near at this time of year, remember to pop a bottle of French champagne at the appropriate hour, pause, remember, and salute their memory with a toast.
So on that slightly melancholy note, merry xmas from dial up in Napier to all the PA crew!

I have got a great idea for every post i make! I'll create a straw man argument, demolish it, then use that to show how easy it is to delude myself that my bitter cynicism is cleverness.

All this discussion proves is that the technocrats of teh interweb are more tribal in their voting patterns than they care to admit. If what people here posit were really true attack ads would not exist and the Swift Boat Veterans would have guaranteed John Kerry victory. The chattering classes don't decide elections though.

Hang on, is the "Antique's Roadshow" and "Living in the Sun" reality T.V? Surely my flatmate lies?
And I do love Giuliana Rancic on E! news, and I am facinated by the way they all stand about like a giant wind machine is trying to blow them over from just off-camera :(
I do know there were some lesbians on shorty street, and one of the doctors is bonking a mum and a daughter or something?

I've never watched an episode of Shortland Street. I've never watched a single reality TV episode from start to finish.
I am sad at my sidelining from mainstream New Zealand.
All hail teh torrentz! -
All Blacks these days seem to spend their whole time with their financial consultants admiring themselves in the mirror at the hairdressers or telling each other how tough they are at the tattoo parlour. They are soft, and expect to have the red carpet rolled out for them to walk along and if they do cop criticism, they bail for the northern hemisphere whining about the 'unrealistic expectations" of kiwi fans.
I've never warmed to the idea of fake parochialism being used to sell the jerseys of franchise teams whose primary role is to deliver punters to advertisers and sponsors. The whole Super 14 is a bit of bore fest with players who don't even have the courtesy of a tradesmen's ethic and pride in their work displayed by the NRL's workmen.
The highlight of the 2007 rrugby season was the Hawkes Bay team - men who i could relate to, taking pride in their jersey and their province.
In short, I am sick of rugby and disillusioned with the professional game in New Zealand. Good luck to Henry, I suspect the hardest job next year will be filling the stadiums as disillusioned fans stay away.

"..But, holy shit, the small-arms war currently being fought between The Standard and Kiwiblogblog on one hand and Kiwiblog on the other is something to stay away from. I dread to think how that will unfold in 08..."
Hand to hand with entrenching tools and bayonets by then I should imagine. -
Definitely chalk one up to the standard. Watching the webwars is fascinating at the moment. The Labourites obviously concluded that kiwiblog has far too much of the web and have decided they want some of it for themselves. The fight is going along a ding a dong, so this signifies a first big hit for the standard over kiwiblog. Of course I'm biased but I'm loving it, it has got all the fun of the fair.
But a serious question. As a person who uses teh interweb primarily for entertainment and business could someone more l33t than me tell me if Mr. Farrar's case against Sam Dixon is solid or not? Or is David Farrar just trying to re-create himself as a victim searching for a persecutor? Its very confusing, but shockingly poor form from Sam Dixon if the accusation is true.
As far as the manufactured outrage of the anti-EFB crowd goes - I started the Xmas party season two weeks ago and from now until mid January I'm tuning out. I'll start getting outraged about politics again in February. It'll die a death over summer methinks.

What would we do without Nicky?
