Key looks more like the steely dan, eagles, fleetwood mac type with a bit of garth brooks and keith urban thrown in.

Tapu Misa: Ex-prisoners need space to learn how to be free
I don't know Bailey Kurariki, but it's possible to understand if not excuse the path leading him to that fatal alleyway in 2001. He was 12. He's spent most of his teenage years locked up.
It is said Kurariki is "very unlikely to reoffend". But there are no guarantees. He will need continuing support from people who care - and understanding from everyone else.
We know what he looks like, even where he's likely to live. But he's served his sentence. We should now leave him alone to try to make something of his life.

Also, and I've probably said this here before, I'm pretty sure Kurariki would have been paroled a noticably earlier if he weren't so notorious. So in effect he served more time in prison because he was so young.
The fact that he was a brat with no regard for authority while in youth justice care wouldn't have helped his cause either.
I did a couple of workshop in kingslea while he was there and his attitude was 'what could you possibly do to me now to punish me ?'
He was pretty on to it as i remember and used to getting his own way. Hope fully he can leverage that into a legit career and role model others.
I bet he'd make a great public speaker given the right handlers...heh

dubmugga asked a direct question back on friday midday, then it was mentioned again, and again, till the silence was deafening. That makes me feel ......unsettled.....
It was obviously terribly important to you Rob. The answer is yes, but I really didn't feel like being ordered around or hectored by you. It's actually quite depressing having you do this to yet another thread.
Cheer up Russell :)
I'd be keen to hear your reasons for thinknig BS is the man for these changing times ? I do hope it's not a case of the devil you know. Personally I just dont think he's got an exit strategy or a turnaround one but if so I'd love to hear it. I suspect more than likely any turnaround solution will come from somone outside the system and co opted from a sponsored fact finding workshop *yawn*.
More than likely though, perhaps he doesn't even think anything is wrong which would be even more disturbing. Surely someone as clever as him could have counterfactualised the current less than desirable scenario where radio and a select group determines who gets deemed worthy enough to inflict on the public at large and accountability to that public gets the big sidestep.
Im more interested in a performance based independent review and a change at the top if warranted. Theres a reason why american presidents can only serve 2 terms and entrenched bureaucrats are where the power is really at.

Not at all Sofie. I asked a valid question but I just dont see the point in forcing an issue that in a years time may not exist.
He went so far as to register under slightly different name, but by the time he'd spent two hours today typing a post today and when he hit save, the login had dropped off and his post disappeared. How embarrassing. So: my fault, not his.
I hope he tries again.
I hope so too. Its a brave man to come out and get down and dirty with the great unwashed.
Maybe he could type it in word or notepad then cut and paste into here.

For any government process, I suggest that you could start with writing to the appropriate Minister(of Broadcasting). In this case, the Hon.Trevor Mallard.Bear in mind though, the "authority to call for change" you mention will take more than a letter but that is a start and his office can advise you . Good luck!
I'm in no hurry so might just wait til the* ahem* inevitable change of gov't and see where key is at ?
Looks like the public service is in for the hell shakeup and knowing traditional nats policies on arts and culture and helens pet project which is/was NZoA. I'm pickin BS is gonna have to show a bit more cleverness and vision than he ever has.
So who here is into Burial ? Dubsteps anonymous and visionary superstar ? Even if musically his vision is backwards looking the marketing angle is surely not. Word of mouth hyperstition of an insular underground musical scene picked up by the tastemaking blogosphere to make real overground traction...
i think theres something in that for all of us...no ???

re: snorkels. I have a brown one with orange lining which i love to death and wear over my brown fubu hoodie for that *authentic* hiphop look...haha

__Are you saying it isnt in a roundabout fashion funded by advertising on traditional broadcast mediums ?__
yes that is what I am saying.
I'm inclined to disbelieve you. It says NZoA is funded by the gov't which in turn is funded by ???... I'm picking some form of tax from the broadcast sector which is ultimately reliant on advertising.
So if it is funded by our taxes surely that gives us even more authority to call for change. In which case what is the appropriate process to follow ???
And does anybody know what does the nats arts/music/culture policy involves re NZoA ???

NZONAIR don't get any money from radio so that is moot point.
Are you saying it isnt in a roundabout fashion funded by advertising on traditional broadcast mediums ?

it's hard to overstate how much industry knowledge, how many contacts, how much unprinted information Brendan has in his head.
No one is irreplaceable, but this is one very clever, very motivated man..why toss that away.
Clever enough to ensure that by keeping that info in his head and his cards close to his chest he won't be looking for another job any time soon but clever enough to see us through the next phase ?
I don't think so. Maybe a putin style legacy is next. Hand pick a successor and consult from a lesser role but still hold the reins.
Seriously though, industry knowledge isn't like rocket surgery and it's a small world of contacts but i guess the main point is, the industry has changed dramatically in the last 7 yrs and a lot of that knowledge is irrelevent in todays climes. NZoA hasnt changed to reflect that so the buck needs to stop somewhere.
Even the music industry comish with its band touring and copyright workshops is an obsolete joke. The focus and money for artists isnt in touring unless you're some crusty old rock dinosaur group short on reddies and the commish don't have the nowse to educate others on copyright in the digital age. No one does yet thus making them slighlty irrelevant also.
in a land awash with committees and bureaucracy as NZ is, I guess you pull some people together to work these things through. But the time to do some is soon, and hopefully the exit of a major record label (with others surely to follow) will provide the impetus to do so. It should.
...and if it doesnt then what ??? how much time do you give it ???
Russell, while the points you raised re: revising the brief and vetting applicants makes sense and ties into what i thought about linking apra to amplifier and selecting radio tunes from there and paying royalties accordingly, the current system as we all know is afforded by advertising revenue on trad broadcasting mediums.
The net cant generate that income to feedback to NZoA or police copyright so i cant see NZoA, APRa/RIANZ biting the hand that feeds them.
Do we really need someone to have the knowledge. Cant we via the net have the knowledge but not the someone :) ?
As for IMNZ aggregating anything without access to APRA logs... it cant, so willl always be a toothless tiger waiting in the wings. They would be my obvious choice for an independent review of NZoA, copyright and digital pimping issues but i cant see that happening either.
so where does that leave us again... the status quo ?
BTW who is cheap hip and young enough to qualify for indy input to NZoA ? I'd say mikee from loop but i wouldn't trust that dodgy lil fucker anymore than i do BS to make decisions solely on merit and besides he would have an obvious vested interest in his own roster plus he's from welli ...hehe
