He's funny, generous and he makes Jesus sound like a great guy.
Did you know Dave Dobbyn is the headliner at the upcoming Parachute? It oddly appeals to me!
I was really touched by Don McGlashan's comments about the positive impact that "Royals" had on him - that he helped silence his inner critic, the voice that would say, "Nah, that'll never chart."
And Sisters Underground were brilliant. Most news media reports omitted the performance, probably because they were filed right after "Royals" won, but for me it was one of the highlights of the evening. It's amazing to think that two teen girls could put out a song mentioning assault rifles and filthy hot June days and have it become a beloved anthem of New Zealand. That's the magic.

Is the officer responsible really saying that all parents should constantly watch their children if they live somewhere near a creek?
It's even stranger when you consider the geography of Auckland - creeks are everywhere! Most people live near at least one creek!
It's such an odd press release. It's like they're trying to issue a warning, but they haven't actually worked out what the warning needs to be about. And saying CYPFS instead of CYF make it sound about as authoritative as a post on the Trade Me community forums.

BTW, a bit of vocal from "Be Thankful for What You Got" is sampled in NWA's "Gangsta Gangsta", and it flips the sentiment, becoming what the original song is attempting to dilute.

The day after the riots, I was visiting my whanau in Auckland and I remember having a conversation with my cousin (we were both aged 9) about the riot. We weren't entirely sure what had happened, but we knew it was bad. The next day my family drove down Queen Street before returning to Hamilton, but most of the chaos was cleaned up and there wasn't much to see (and it was a Sunday in the 1980s, so things were pretty quiet and empty, anyway).
But reading this piece made me finally realise what went on. It's insane to think that Dave Dobbyn could have somehow been considered to have caused a riot. But no. That's not what happened. It was the police being foolish, treating a pop concert the same way as they'd treat a protest rally.
But Dave Dobbyn doesn't get off scot-free. In 1995 he broke the internet. A live gig was broadcast on the internet - a first for New Zealand. Back then all the interwebs came via Waikato Uni and it couldn't really handle the demands of such a bandwidth-intense event. That night the NZ internet was noticeably slower, for which frustrated geeks had an easy target for their ire.

And here's a cool new local song - "Bridges" by Brood, produced by Joel Little. Already creating buzz beyond these shores. Very delicious.

Here are some more new Lorde interview/profile videos, proving that, OMG, she is so smart and so hilarious. She even makes the video crew crack up at one point.

There's something about this case that has always intrigued me and your post has pretty much explained what - that, yeah, Lundy did it, but the police got the story wrong.
The media seemed to be on the side of David Bain (oh, that loveable nerd in the Cosby jumper), but there isn't really that same feeling towards Mark Lundy. The circus will be most interesting.

Hard News: Thursday Music: Doing the Business, in reply to
I thought people might like to see where Lorde’s music was recorded, so I hopped on my bike earlier. It’s quite an interesting building ….
Ten years ago a friend of mine lived in the upper floor, in a cool-dude bFM flat. It is indeed a really interesting building. I don't know what the bottom floor is like (where Golden Age studios is) but the top floor was all these offices (or bedrooms!) with gorgeous wood panelling. It didn't feel like it had much done to it over the years so much of the original 1930s (ish) character was still there. It seems like a perfect place to record an album.

More Lorde! It seems Vevo are doing a series of short interview/profile things with her this week. Here's the first, where she talks about her influences - both musical and literary. She read Raymond Carver when she was 10!

Update: J-Col is not a Miley fan:
@robyngallagher @JudithCollinsMP You're referring to Gotye and Kimbra being naked but for body paint in the "Somebody that I used to know" video, right?
@JudithCollinsMP @robyngallagher aNo. Wasn't impressed with Miley actually
Judith is probably more a fan of Miley's Hannah Montana years.
