  • Hard News: The K Road Story,

Great story Russell. There are some things that make Auckland the city that it is, and K Road is definitely one of them.

A couple of weeks ago I finally got around to reading Ted Dawe's K. Road and can strongly recommend it. I'm now looking forward to reading Into The River (and not just to piss Family First off either!)

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The great full eight,

Thanks for the link to the history of Charles Begg and Co, Russell. I remember a lot of musos in ChCh used to hang out there, including Neville Claughton who worked there for many years. In particular I recall seeing Eddie Hansen and other members of the as-yet unknown band Ticket jamming instore back in the late sixties.

I was on holiday last week and haven't caught up with the original thread, but has anyone pointed out that not everyone adored Bowie in his heyday? For example Burton Cummings of Guess Who. It would be interesting to know if he had a change of heart since writing that song.

  • Hard News: Music: The year the…, in reply to Trevor Nicholls,

Thanks for posting that, I have been an ELP fan for almost 50 years but didn't know about this particular song. Interesting to read about its release on Wikipedia:

"The song was recorded by Lake in 1974 and released separately from ELP in 1975, reaching number two in the UK charts.[4] The song was kept from number one by Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". Lake has commented: "I got beaten by one of the greatest records ever made. I would’ve been pissed off if I’d been beaten by Cliff (Richard)." However, orchestrator Godfrey Salmon was less charitable: "I was surprised the single wasn’t more successful. I thought 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was rubbish, and still do. When it got to No 1 before we’d even brought ours out, I thought it would be long gone by Christmas. How wrong can you get?"

That has to be the best one-paragraph summary of Sensible Sentencing and Family First that I have ever read in my life - well done!

But a majority of the council itself rejected stunt amendments from Cameron Brewer to freeze staff costs, ...

By the way, has anybody ever seen Cameron Brewer and Rick Moranis in the same room together?

Rubio may seem less extreme than some of his rivals, but his policies are straight out of the neolib book - see this for example.

  • Hard News: The good guys,

For me one of the biggest differences between the teams of 2011 and 2015 was having an accurate reliable goalkicker. In 2011 the top three first fives (Carter, Cruden, Slade) were also the most reliable goalkickers but all were injured at some point. Piri Weepu was used in the quarterfinal against Argentina and did a fantastic job (remember the "Never Fear, Piri's Here" T-shirts that suddenly cropped up after that game?) but crapped out miserably after that. And although Stephen Donald saved the day with that kick in the 2011 final, it was only just inside the goalposts.

This year it was quite different - Dan Carter was incredibly reliable and accurate. In both the semifinal and final his kicks were almost always straight down the middle, as were his two amazing drop goals.

In the past NZ hasn't put much emphasis on goal kicking, as there seemed to be a widely-held belief that we could always win by scoring tries, and it wasn't that long ago that NZ crowds would boo if a visiting team attempted a drop goal.

Looking at the 2015 tournament it appeared that every major team had a goalkicker who could bang them over from anywhere. Once again, this team seems to have learned a lot from 2011.
