Having collected some more feathers I played around shooting them with the 50mm + tubes and with a couple of flashes with different coloured gels on them.

Off the spider track, but still with insects, these are aphids being chowed down by ladybird grubs, the ugly ladybird phase before they turn into pretty little things.

I once had a grey house spider on my windowsill for months. I called him Fang until she had babies at which point I called her Fang. My wife was not too pleased that I insisted Fang didn't get broomed away but she let me keep her in place for a few months before I collected her up and moved her outside.
One day as I was trying to get a good macro of her, she obviously decided I needed to keep my distance so she lunged at the camera.
Thing is, when you are looking at a grey house spider through macro, she really is like Shelob. I got such a fright feel over backwards and uttered some bad words.

Ooooh is this the same kind of spider? I think this one has a moth wrapped up in there.

Well I do love a good spider. Especially jumpy spiders. This image, with the blood red of the windowsill, feels kind of Spanish to me - a bit Hemingway Death in the Afternoon, matador versus bull or in this case spider versus fly.

Alright here's my first attempt at focus stacking. This is an Oystercatcher's feather, stacked from 12 shots.
I've got lots of pictures of spiders from when I was doing lots of macros a few years back, but out of sensitivity to folks who get freaked by super zoomed spiders in your face, I won't post them.

Right I'm going to try that focus stacking. I bought an old FD Pentax bellows with a slide adapter and old Pentax FD 55mm lens to go with to use for digitizing old slides. But of course without the slide adapter it's a macro setup. I'm not sure what level of magnification it gives me at its most extreme (it was designed for full frame film) but it's pretty zoomed. This is actually a small seashell (less than diameter of a 10 cent piece).

How do you do the focus stacking? Is there special software to do you just do it in Photoshop by masking out bits of various layers?
I’ve used my nifty 50 + tubes as my macro setup for years but never really tried the whole focus stacking thing, mainly cause I handhold and don’ use a tripod so don’t have images that will stack.
I loves my nifty 50.
