Sayana - you do know that the needles don't go all the way in, right? Really, it's not that bad - you should be much more worried about the permanence than the pain.

Yes, I do know that. I never said I was sensible about my issues with needles. :-)

So Susan and I spend years being members of the same pack, and years later when we want to treat ourselves, she gets acryllic nails and I get tattoos. People make very different assumptions about us from an exterior view on the basis of those things, and those assumptions are less than correct.

And yet, I've been secretly wishing for the courage to get a tattoo for years, but I am a total wuss when it comes to needles. I even have the design I want on a laminated card so I don't accidentally destroy it or throw it away.

Yes I can see your point about the nails, Emma. I'm sorry if it was a bit nasty. It's just that I really do not understand the nails. I've always felt that it's social conditioning that makes women want to wear impractical things. It's fashion, isn't it?

As the friend of Emma's that has acrylic nails, I feel I have to put something in here. I'm not offended by your comments at all - there's lots of stuff other women do that I don't get.

I've had them for nigh on 15 years now (except for the times when money was short) and I can't imagine being without them anymore.

Now, there are several reasons I have them

    1. they're pretty, and can be downright gorgeous
    2. they make me feel good
    3. they are not impractical in my daily life at all. I do housework, garden (although not often) and chop wood with them. I play the piano in my teaching for upwards of 5-6 hours a day. The only place I have any trouble with them is picking up cards off a smooth table when playing boardgames.
    4. I suffer from fairly chronic eczema, and they are smooth edged and blunt enough that I do not gouge great hunks of flesh out of my arms and legs in my sleep.
    5. my students love them and are always willing to offer ideas of which design I should have next.

However, I also completely understand that many people consider them to be frivolous and a bit silly. That's fine. I like them and it's my money.

  • Up Front: The Up Front Guide to Parenting,

    Right.

I'll just be down in the cellar, then. Designing, building and maintaining absolutely everything that enables your feckless, carefree modern lifestyle.

No, really, it's no bother, even though it has been a bit damp down there lately and my chest is playing up something awful. You go out with your sparkling, witty friends. I'll be fine, honestly. I prefer to be alone with my robots, really I do.

    I am the engineer.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
    When company comes,
    But I laugh,
    And eat well,
    And grow strong.

    Tomorrow,
    I'll be at the table
    When company comes.
    Nobody'll dare
    Say to me,
    "Eat in the kitchen,"
    Then.

    Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
    And be ashamed--

    With apologies to Langston Hughes...

  • Up Front: The Up Front Guide to Parenting,

The only student worse than an Engineering student is a Performance Voice student.

On behalf of my best friend, hey! And also, possibly, fair point.

In my defence, when I finally became a Performance Voice Student I was a responsible, studious and dedicated student who averaged an A throughout my degree.

Back when I was doing my BA/LLB in Maths and Law that turned into a BA in Linguistics and Literature but was halted due to an Extensive Study into Bastard Gin, Actual Gin and Stupid Relationships, not so much...

And from start to finish - BA/LLB to BA to BMus (Perf) - it was only 9 years. There was a little break in between.

I'd have to say, personally, I prefer the picture of Kahui that's just a headshot over the one of him shirtless.

  • Up Front: Are We There Yet?,

heterosexual couples who marry for companionship rather than for strictly reproductive purpose

That's the situation my husband and I are in. And my parents (Catholic) have mostly stopped bugging me about having kids. I do think they had always assumed I would grow out of not wanting kids, but it hasn't happened yet.

Funnily enough, we went looking for a Catholic priest to officiate at our wedding (both familes practising catholics). We had little luck. The first we asked couldn't do it as he was off hobnobbing at the Vatican. The second refused as we were not having the wedding in the church (the building, not the religion).

We ended up with an Anglican minister who was a friend of my father, and a fairly non-religious service. Suited us. And we got lots of platters and towels!

Oh! Heh, in the interests of full disclosure I should probably mention that the groom isn't in that photo. There's another with him in the same position I'm in there. I don't think the photographer quite knew what to make of us.

Was that the same photographer who took a photo of my cleavage? Hmmm?
