  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

I’m not sure that they should really just drop their opinions on his shortcomings because people who can’t tell bullshit from reporting need to be looked after.

You are missing my point entirely. The MSM reports a version of the truth. It also reports what facts it considers pertinent. The MSM often behaves as little more than corporate shills within an establishment echo chamber. Smart people outside the room with their noses against the window will see right through them. Except, while they are smart they don’t have degrees, don’t understand the need to check references and have never done media studies so all they see is a bunch of self serving propagandists – so they go and find news that is more to their taste and truth that more accurately reflects their lived experience.

And having a hissy fit because Trump might want to live at home or he doesn’t feel he has to tell the lazy and entitled MSM Washington pack when he takes a shit or goes out to dinner is not belittling the fact that

…the presidency is an important job which should be approached with seriousness and professionalism…

It is just doing it differently, and given all the absurd rituals around being the president in Washington maybe that is no bad thing. But crying wolf all the time about people who don’t conform to the ridiculous hyper-routines and mores does belittle the seriousness and professionalism of proper journalists when they report on actually important stuff Trump does.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

The US MSM is in a state of virtual melt down over Trump, often simply because he plans to do things differently. They seem incapable of distinguishing between the merely breaking with tradition - living in Trump tower instead of the Whitehouse, not letting the press know every time he takes a dump - to the obviously worrying, like his wierd twitter rants and the obvious cronyism and corruption already evident in his woefully inadequate transition process. As long as the media insists on portraying Trump as a crazy chump on things that are of no consequence those sections of the general population who are not so adept at sifting legitimate news from the fake, the snake and the noise are going to carry on believing the MSM conspiracy against "the Donald" is real - because actually, it kinda is.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

Since it is the 75th anniversary of the RNZN, time to work in one of my favourite stories – in 1941 Admiral Andrew Cunningham, when advised the Royal Navy should abandon the Commonwealth troops on Crete to their fate in the face of deadly German air attacks on his ships, said “It takes 5 years to build a ship, but 500 to build a tradition” and sent the Navy back in to rescue the army. Well, in the media, credibility is like that. it takes a long, long time to build your reputation but only one or two stories to wreck it, and the NZ corporate MSM has well and truly trashed their reputation. From the disgraceful orchestrated smearing of David Cunliffe to allowing Mike Hosking 30 primetime minutes everynight to cheerlead National to ZM allowing leighton Smith Breitbart sourced ravings to stay on air to everytime the Herald allows Bernard Orsman to publish another one of his miserable gotcha stories, from every time the Heralds political reporters act as John Key’s fan club to everytime they let John Rougham write an editorial to their regurgitating of pap sourced from the Disgusting Daily Mail – TVNZ, the Herald, ZM etc destroy their credibility. When a pay to publish site like thespinoff – with its cast of whining millenials – can intoxicate people with it’s content you know your MSM is shit. And
people then think “Hey! – the MSM is just another biased news source! Where is that RT story that makes more sense to me?”

  • Hard News: The Long, Strange Trip, in reply to simon g,

Those probability numbers were based (obviously) on the polls, which simply missed – or misread – millions of voters.

First brexit now this - polling is completely broken in the post MSM age.

    Trump has won Florida.

Time to pull out of all defense ties with the USA. I used to support the American alliance as the most rational realpolitik choice, but I'll be buggered if I'll agree to us supporting a fascist.

  • Hard News: Trump's Dummkopfs, in reply to Rob Stowell,

What I find interesting about this whole schemozzle is the number of Trump supporters infesting New Zealand based web forums,

I think we under-estimate the influence of alt-right US based online media here on our NZ right wing. Increasingly the sort of aggressive, paranoid style of the US right pops up here as well.

  • Hard News: Trump's Dummkopfs,

Whereas those who paid attention realize that none of the traditional point-scoring matters a jot. Because one candidate just pissed on the election itself.

Pretty much. Tomorrow isn't going to be about how the judges scored it, or the latest "sensational" anti-Clinton video. Tomorrow's headlines are going to be about Trump hedging on accepting the outcome. According to RNZ, when he did that people int the studio audience gasped. He lost everything that one moment.

  • Hard News: Trump's Dummkopfs,

Anyone else followed the gruesome descent into Trumpism of the once normal Colonial Viper over at the The Standard? It is fascinating from a forensic viewpoint, because he is a textbook example in our own online community of how an aggreived person with an issue with "the establishment" can be turned by alt-right online media into a raving lunatic.
