  • Hard News: nz.general: a speech,

For many of the smaller ISPs then (and even now, from what I’ve heard), though, it was more “accidental” that the salespeople were misleading customers about “just signing up for information” on a form that was actually a service contract allowing both internet and telephone service to be transferred away from Telecom (usually, though sometimes Clear).

Sky had contracted some salespeople (not sure if directly or via another company) that were doing exactly this about 10 years ago. Did it to my Nana who struggles to say no to people the fuckers.

  • Hard News: No Red Wedding,

Does that really stack up, though? I thought Labour’s main problem last time was a whole bunch of their voters not bothering to turn out.

If they don't go vote for you, you can't count them as your voters any more, by definition.

  • Hard News: Local interest,

I was really trying hard to stay with him until he got to “Exercising Auckland dogs.” In week 5 , WTF !

I'll happily vote for a Mayor who says they'll turn up and walk my dogs for half an hour a day. Well worth my rates bill!

  • Legal Beagle: Council elections: FPP Q&A,

Graeme, I've seen numerous people link to your STV blog post as they've discussed how to vote down here in Dunedin. Had an impact I'd say.

When you think about it FPP is terribly named. In STV there is a post - you have to get to a number - over 50% in a mayoral race, about 9% in my horrendously large council ward.

In FPP there is no post, you just have to finish in the top x of candidates. The post is whatever number of votes x+1 got (the first losing candidate), so it's a floating number completely unlike a post in the ground.

  • Hard News: Local interest,

It wasn't until after I posted my form (we use STV down here for mayor and council) that I fully got my head around strategically using my vote to help people less likely to be elected get there, over people who are my #1 pick.

Example - if my #1 candidate is going to be elected for sure, and my #2 candidate is more marginal, I should rank them #2 then #1. If #2 doesn't make it, then my vote falls to #1 anyway, so I lose nothing.

If I do it the other way and vote #1 then #2, then when #1 gets elected, some proportion of my vote stays with them, and only part of my vote falls down to #2.

Maybe next STV election I'll have the strategy down pat.

  • Hard News: Event Season,

If we’re gonna change the months, it’d be great to put September (“seventh month”), October (“eighth month”), November (“ninth month”) and December (“tenth month”) in their proper places!

    Romans go home!

    She has presence.

Her voice sounds like it's struggling through, particularly at the beginning of the song.

Young body and vocal chords to be put through what she must be doing at the moment.

Alternatively I could have just pulled the statement out of my ass, but it shouldn’t matter how I arrived at my conclusion.

I don't mind how you arrived at the conclusion, but I'd hope you would.

Especially if you don't want 'aggressive feminists' making you look silly.

I should have the right to speak my mind without being battered down by aggressive feminists

I think that's because they're thinking with their feminist hearts, not their occasionally-in-use brains.
