I meant the boat rocking won't come from within the system from a group of handpicked people asked to do a huge task in an impossibly short time. It has to come from all of us and this is the best time to do it just before an election.

I know a couple of good people on this group but does anyone really expect there is going to be any boat rocking at this stage of the electoral cycle and with this minister?

Not content with just collecting individual named client data the Government is now setting up a new government agency to facilitate and extend surveillance. It will be called the Social Investment Agency, with its own board. A sort of Five eyes for the vulnerable, poor and marginalised.

Hard News: Media Take: the poor health…, in reply to
I agree that lack of quality social housing with appropriate community support is a major issue. Poverty and the punitive attitudes of Work and Income don't help either.

I quite like many of the policies Jeremy Corbyn is talking about. In many ways he is being a radical left winger in the spirit of the historic reforming Labour Party. He is also the leader of one of the biggest left wing popular global movements - doesn't the Labour Party have something like 500.000 members? Whey does he also have to be telegenic and personable?

Access: Stroppy parents and battling…, in reply to
I haven't searched for the petition itself but there is a correspondence about it in the IHC files including some patronising words towards the angry parents by the incoming Minister. The National Government readily sided with the residents who did not want those children in their midst.

I became interested in Janet Fraser in the 1990s when Michael King got ill and couldn't do his research for the essay on her in the Dictionary of NZ Biography. With my long time interest in lefty feminism I grabbed the opportunity. It was very hard to find any published material about her so it became one of those tricky but ultimately satisfying detective projects through primary sources, including an interview with her granddaughter, the actress Alice Fraser. Peter Fraser really needed Janet in order to do all the good stuff he did. Peter was also a very hands-on, accessible MP and accessible local MP for Wellington Central (later called Brooklyn) for many decades.

Being locked up in the mental health system can increase the mental distress of autistic people. So even if someone with autism goes into the system because of misinterpreted meltdowns, which may be in response to stress, sensory overload or even experiences (common for autistic kids) such as bullying, being in the system can make them sick. It can be very boring and they are restricted from accessing those things which calm them such as the bush, beach or animals.

Mike Moore was famous for long rambling speeches without any full stops. I heard one in the1990 election campaign. There was a full half hour which didn't seem to have any completed sentences. Lots of useful stuff I'm sure, perhaps even visionary, but I couldn't understand a lot of it. He was also very socially conservative and no supporter of feminism.
