  • Hard News: Trams, drams and scams,

Sandy from Dunedin, Doris from Queenstown, Amy from Oamaru, Lisa from Rangiora

Actually, I've just realised that Draper's dames all live fairly close to each other. I suggest they all meet at Amy's place and have a "Robin Draper is awesome!!!" fondue party.

  • Hard News: Trams, drams and scams,

I think the obvious solution that Robin's harem of supporters - Sandy from Dunedin, Doris from Queenstown, Amy from Oamaru, Lisa from Rangiora - should form their own Robin Draper LiveJournal community where they can discuss his tales of exotic oils to their heart's content.

These ladies are obviously not long-term PA System members, so they would be better off forming a niche community for their own special needs.

And, oh, have they gots them some needs.

  • Hard News: Trams, drams and scams,

After a hard day's toil in the scoria mines of New Zealand's Mt Eden, there's nothing I like more than relaxing with a nice glass of palm oil and scrunching up me panties, while I post two or possbily three messages on PA System.

    Therefore, I am.

I found a few clips on YouTube of old TVNZ opening promos and I've made a post with them over on Our Tube.

Is this the influence of This Is New Zealand?

  • National identify in TV promos,

Discussion about the This is New Zealand film got me thinking about its influence on visual depictions of our national identity, particularly old TVNZ channel promos.

The frist clip is the national anthem that started the day in the late '80s and possible the '90s.

And this one is the opening clip from the early '80s.

It's interesting to watch them with the sound off and take in all the images used. Sometimes it feels like New Zealand is Queenstown.

Ha, I think that's it! Soaring music over the alps first thing in the morning while waiting for the cartoons to start...

"It's our New Zeeeeeland. We're so proud to be here. We bring the best - the very best to yooooou!"

I can't remember all of the lyrics to the rest of the song, but it had bits like "from this lovely land of ours" and "from mountains high, to lakes so deep and blue" (No mention of urban areas - interesting). I tried looking for it in YouTube a few months ago, but with no luck.

From memory, this played when TV started each morning - kind of the opposite of the Goodnight Kiwi. I don't think it was an except from This Is New Zealand, mainly because it looked newer than something filmed in 1970.

But I bet it was directly inspired by This Is New Zealand, and further strengthened this particular aspcet of our national idenity

that film, and that sequence, probably had a major impact on the way I have seen my country since.

Now, I'm pretty sure I'm to young to have seen This is New Zealand, and yet it sounds really familiar.

So this makes me think that it's not just Russell that the film had a major impact on. I wonder if it has shaped a whole generation's view of New Zealand (or better or worse).

Has this cinematic promo film become the prototypic image of New Zealand, from which all other images since have sprung from?

I hope it screens in Auckland! I really want to see it now.

  • Island Life: Ring Gina,

How does John Campbell get there by 7.30?

Well, back when Cambo was doing the news, I finished work at 7pm and walked from approximately the Sky Tower to Foodtown Quay Street. When I got to the bread aisle at about 7.15, there was Mr Marvellous pushing his trolley.

Tierney, along with one Robert Rakete and one Larnie Gifford, actually presented the truly horrific "CV" in early '89.

Hey, there was nothing wrong with CV. I was 14 and it introduced me to De La Soul, which changed my life for the better.

At the time I was glad to see the end of Radio With Pictures, which had become Radio With Pictures For People Stuck In An Early-'80s Timewarp.

  • Hard News: Shonky scepticism,

I've noticed TV3 started touting one of their reports as DOCTOR Lillian Ng (sp). What is she a doctor of?

Dr Ng is a GP, and currently practises. Auckland University's alumni website says she has a Bachelor of Human Biology, a Master of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Diploma in Paediatrics and a Certificate of Public Health.
