Class warfare doesn't sell newspapers though.

There's always time for that to change

You seriously don't see any good being done by the Sallys, Methodist Mission, and St Vinnys?

That's all good. But until you've finished fixing those things, how about we don't take a whole heap of money away from the organisations that are doing the work at the coal face.

Whatever help or good work is done by these organisations is in my mind completely undone by the tainted help they offer.
That is just my opinion and I know I am in the minority.
If there is a "coal face" of poverty, one of the reasons it exist is because of the influence religions have had on human affairs through the centuries.

And it continues to hinder tho it will be around because of our physical evolutionary history, the way our brain works.

Maybe we need a whole new way of tackling these problems and isnt it about time we got on and found those and put them into practice.
But then I become bi-polar and say to myself "Yeah right that's gonna happen"

  • Island Life: The World Is Full of Cu*ts,

I'm not part of any religion, but that's crap. Lots of people involved with religion do good work simply for that purpose.

Excuse me if I dont take your word for that.

If they didn't, us atheists would be needing to spend a lot more time and money providing foodbanks, drug treatment facilities, halfway houses etc.

Because they exist secular organisations like governments do not do as much they should. Social welfare should receive the largest cut of tax payer funding along with education and medical facilities. We should be caring for each other much much more that we do. It shouldnt be left to volunteer's, social work should be a respected career with good remuneration for anyone who wants to do it. Social work professionals, teachers and doctors would be at the top of our society not lawyers accountants and fucking politicians and business fuck heads.
We should have stopped wars by now and be a good long way towards solving poverty. As far as I'm concerned we should be spending a lot more than we presently do.

A little more recognition for that work, wouldn't go astray.

Yeah right they dont get enough recognition.
    FFS think about it.
And dont even think about bringing up Mother Teresa.

if aliens are tapping into our tv networks, they will assume the whole place is populated by clean-cut young 'uns with oddly smooth skin.

Whhhaaaat ......ya mean those interstellar space ship with aliens thingies dont have a communications device (Im dizzy now) that can get "The Biggest Loser".

Big Bang Theory is about the only current show I can think of where the geeks look like geeks.
    Beauty and the Geek.

You obviously do not watch television at the correct time.
Have you not heard of the "geekqualiser"

Which says that, actually, you don't understand it at all. I never said it was a tangible intertwining, I just said it was complicated.

You said intricate, make up your mind.
But it is a tangible intertwining cause it goes on in a persons mind which is tangible. It will be complicated, as it is often incredibly difficult to fathom the reasons why anyone does anything.

Separate spiritual activites and charitable activites by any western church is a crock, they are all to the same end futhering their rotten agenda.
But if you want to find accommodation in you mind by separating them out and saying 'hey look churches do good dont knock 'em.'
    You are a fool.

  • Island Life: The World Is Full of Cu*ts,

    Matthew Poole Writes

intricate intertwining of the spiritual and charitable aspects of the major churches

    What complete and utter bollocks.
Any intertwining exists only in peoples minds it is not intricate. Churches exploit the centuries of deference that comes their way for no other good reason, and hide behind their "good works" aggressively and for as much as it is worth.

Im with Sarah Silverman "Sell the Vatican"

Is your desire driven by your attitude toward organised religion?

    No

Or because you think it would impact on the likes of Destiny Church?

    Thats a side benefit

  • Island Life: The World Is Full of Cu*ts,

how many charities that do the work of alleviating poverty have no religious ties?

There are quite a few Oxfam, Red Cross more here:
    http://www.hunch.com/charities/toplists/no-religious-affiliation/103823/
Its not a list only focused on poverty alleviation.

To me the work that religious organisations is mainly focussed on human problems it a product of their past activities based on their underlying chauvinism that human beings are the pinnacle of creation in this physical manifestation by their supreme being, whichever that is. And helping out others was codified in their literature.
So religious environmental organisations are either non existent or in their infancy. The earth wasnt that important to religious charities up until I would guess the 1970's. This gap was gleefully filled during that silly season called The New Age.

Now it was thought that if a person fell on hard times it was because he or she had in some way strayed from a path designated by a force that person would become able to comprehend in some meaningful way until they had been around for awhile - 15 20 yrs I guess.
So there is always going to be so many unspoken assumptions going on, and maybe even some peer pressure. If you want to get back on track some god, and by extension those giving the charity, his followers would be of more help if you buy into their version of god.
So sure religious organisations do charity better cause they have more practice at it, and it is where new recruits to boost their numbers will be found.

So Kyle I think your question is loaded. Or is it rhetorical?

spiritual wellness to be of no lesser import to quality-of-life than physical and intellectual wellness.

    But what is spiritual wellness?
Is it having a god to believe in so that you dont feel alone while you are here on earth and alive. But the definition can be as expansive as you want it to be.
And sometimes a person's expectation of their spiritual wellness can become as inflated as a person's waistline.
I am really curious as to how you define spiritual wellness?

It took me a moment to register the silence; another to realise that he was waiting for me to apologise, and finally another in which I deduced that the apology was expected for uttering a profanity in the presence of a holy man.

Hehe, it was hilarious watching Brian Scamaki on Close Up.
I cant seen to find a working link at the TVNZ site tho'.

The man from Cu*twatch spoke for a solid 10 mins laying the scam bare.
Brians reply when he had finished talking.
"I didnt hear a word he said"
Cu*twatch man was two chairs to his right.
Now that is selective hearing par excellence.

And then there's floating the idea of increasing police powers
    The Search and Surveillance Bill:

    THE BILL
    * Removes right to silence for person suspected of having evidence in crime with three or more suspects.
    * Widens provision for searches without warrant.
    * Allows copying of material stored on computers and remote searches of computers.
    * Increases covert investigative powers of the Commerce Commission, the Reserve Bank, Customs and Ministries of Agriculture and of Fisheries.
    * Gives power to detain anyone at scene of search.

Will be going thru the fine print, it better be fucking comprehensive.
