  • Hard News: Food and drink,

I agree with David Slack in having respect for Sir Geoffrey.
Is it possible that those who decry his efforts need some protection for their own drinking habits? If you shoot the messenger who represents a great deal of research into a perceived NZ drinking problem, how can any progress even begin? I think some will be calling "Nanny State. Nobody's business but mine how I drink. I'm not doin' nuffing to nobody, and I bash any b..... who says otherwise!

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

Six o'clock closing was daft but there was only a few drunks visible staggering home after 6. Some would be carrying bowling bags with a couple of half gallon jars of draght beer to tide them over. There certainly weren't any number of young or old hooning it up late at night. Should we return to 6 o'clock closing? Certainly not. Should there be all night opening? Don't think that this is a good thing. There is a hell of a lot of downsides to over the top drinking- everyone knows this but how do you change the trend? Umm

Hooten and others say that the women could instead get a Tax free Student loan $150 per week, or a Student Allowance $175 pw. But I don't think you can be on a Benefit and the above at the same time. I think that the above Loan and allowance is only available for full time students. If I have that right then to get the alternatives, they would lose about $500 pw and have to sell their kids to survive.

  • Hard News: On Ideas,

My contact with Australians has been great, but I do not see them or Australia as being ideals to aspire to. There are plenty of places and people in NZ to do that for me. So why keep telling me that I need to be more productive and "catch up" to Aussie? Go NZ!

  • Hard News: On Ideas,

Thanks Dave: "Increased productivity is just more output for the same input - for nurses and doctors it would be more patients//operations for the same money/drug spend/mortality rate."
If I was a doctor how would I do that? Cut consultations from 15 minutes to 10 minutes or 5 minutes? Ration drugs? Get rid of the charge nurse?
If it is hard to measure the "outputs" of MP's how would you measure their productivity? I don't get it.

Will someone please tell me what increased productivity means? For Nurses, teachers, doctors, scientists, Members of Parliament?

Treated bread for 4 million to perhaps prevent 3-4 spina-bifada events. (Great sympathy for the familes of course.) .
I bet that since Key over-ruled Pharmac regarding Herceptin, he would be quite happy to over-rule the"law"on folic acid to prevent a public reaction. Populist!
