I was just looking at the various Auckland- and Wellington-centred Flickr groups.
The Wellington group has 468 members and 9945 photos, while the Auckland group has only 288 members and 3081 photos.
My perception is that the Auckland one is largely populated with tourists sharing their holiday snaps (i.e. the Sky Tower), so because of this transient audience, there isn't the same sense of community over in Wellington.
And I'm sure Wellington's geography has a lot to do with it. Because people generally live and work in such a compact area, a lot of the same places get photographed in different, creative ways, which adds to the sense of community.
But with Auckland, it's difficult for someone from Albany to feel a connection with a photo of Mission Bay.
I will note, however, that photos of cute kittens know no boundaries!

I often had reason to trawl through the shared drives at my last employer, and one thing I constantly saw was a huge amount of dead or abandoned folders full of all sorts of interesting things.
When I worked for [NZ's largest ISP], I found a directory on their website that contained a long forgotten webpage with a poll on which staff member had the funkiest hairdo.
No one knew anything about it, yet it was out there on the interwebs for anyone to stumble across.

Seriously I don't quite understand how Germany (90 mln people) manages with a single level .de but we need multi level domains for 4 million?
I really like the strictly allocated .au domains.
For example, looks how neatly organised this local council web address is:
www.richmondvalley.nsw.gov.au
And not to mention that .com.au domains are only available to registered Australian companies.
This order pleases me greatly, but I still like the free-for-allness of .coms and other TLDs.

Also something about truth, fiction, and degrees of strangeness?

yes well i put 'good' in quote marks. breathtaking isn't it?
thanks to Spareroom for posting it btw.My meaningful "um" meant that Graham's "Sideslap" was a parody of the NZ Herald's sideswipe, which is compiled by Ana Samways, who also co-runs the Spareroom blog. Geddit?

Then the great American crime plunge of the Clinton years happened.
Freakonomics theorises that the legalisation of abortion in the 1970s lead to the drop in crime in the 1990s.
Abortion meant that fewer children were being born to solo mothers, raised on low incomes, which is somewhat of an incubator for criminals.

That was hilarious. I lol'ed in my latte.
I demand more, at a later date.

Interestingly, in the UK, the government 2LD used to be .govt.uk, but a few years ago they changed it to .gov.uk.
I assume the reason for this is that it's bloody difficult to say "govt" aloud, something that probably wasn't considered back in the '80s.

Y'all need to ask Noizyboy about the scrapbooking programme he watches & recommends on the Living Channel.
OMG yes! I don't have Sky, but whenever I visit my parents, I watch it virtually non-stop. I have learned about "journalling", which equates to "writing shit in your scrapbook".
i still can't get used to Hughy L playing serious roles
Oddly enough, I cannot reconcile Greg House with Hugh Laurie. Maybe it's the American accent and stubble versus the clean-shaven Englishman. As far as I'm concerned, they're two separate people.
