Polity: Key Derangement Syndrome…, in reply to
One other thing about living in a country old fashioned enough to have a proper news media. It opens your eyes to how really, really, really, really, really awful our media has become and how complete the collapse of real journalism is in NZ.
I noticed that in France and Barcelona too, people analysing things, talking, not that I could understand much of it (hopefully it wasn't the equivalent of Euro-Fox) - but great to see it actually happening - is it a critical mass of population thing?
PS: Which Hemingway book are you off to next?

the doors of perception...
But on only a single occasion have I ever seen anyone cycling down it.
Perhaps because you are driving on a motorway and you have 99.9% of your attention on the high speed two-dimensional traffic matrix you are involved in?
I'm not sure what length of cycleway you can see, nor at what speed you pass it, so can't do the math on your possible exposure to viable visual data, chances are as soon as you pass from the 'golden viewing zone' a whole peloton of cyclists come into sight, who knows - seems an odd way and to gather 'statistical samples'?
I'm also sure the other drivers around you would be concerned that you are conducting a visual census of non-connected cycle-paths rather than concentrating on your immediate obligations of matching speeds and following distances with other hurtling masses of metal - not to mention fantasising about being on 'the other path' contemporaneously!

Been sick in bed for some days - ended up watching all of The Deep on TVNZ On Demand - must've missed it on broadcast...
Then went to TV3 on demand to see what they had to offer - couldn't find one thing I wanted to watch. -
Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to
Mr Barclay was a ‘‘young guy who is on a steep learning curve'', Mr Key said.
...
Mr Barclay previously worked as corporate affairs manager at tobacco giant Phillip Morris and worked in National Government ministerial offices.Personally I'd rather MPs negotiated their 'steep learning curves' prior to taking office - and what exactly did he learn at the tobacco company and 'ministerial offices' that left him so bereft of common-sense.

I note that the Coat-of-arms (including the soon to be too feminine crown - according to Matthew Poole) is used prominently on the super expensive new MBIE sign in Stout Street:
The Government's business super ministry has admitted its controversial sign outside its headquarters cost almost $70,000, about 50 per cent more than it previously claimed.
In response to an Official Information Act request on Friday, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) said that the sign outside its Stout Street headquarters cost $43,490.
But during Question Time in Parliament on Wednesday, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce, seen as the architect of MBIE, admitted that the figure applied only to the supply and installation of the sign....plus I guess further updating should the flag/coat-of-arms change...
The GCSB and SIS both use the coat of arms in their logos in everyday use

and

and the Government's overarching logo
https://www.govt.nz/organisations/If the flag changes and/or the coat of arms needs upgrading for whatever reason, I don't share Mr Poole's nonchalance that that won't have a large implementation cost - web sites alone will mount up at the current consultant rate I read about elsewhere on PAS...

And WTF are we paying MBIE nearly $5 million for?

Vexillogical behaviours…
But it’s not a logo change. The flag, from memory, doesn’t appear in any department’s logo
But it does appear on our nation’s coat of arms, and every act and law

History
The first recorded move to establish a Coat of Arms for New Zealand was a design competition in 1906.
The competition was readvertised in 1908 and 75 designs featuring everything from kiwis, sheep, cows, moas and lions to stars, ships, British soldiers, Māori warriors and Union Jacks were received. Three entries were sent to England for judging.
The winning entry was by James McDonald, a draughtsman in the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts. A Royal Warrant granting armorial ensigns and supports was issued on 26 August 1911 and published in the New Zealand Gazette of 11 January 1912. These arms, known as the 1911 arms, are no longer used.
An image of the first New Zealand Coat of Arms is available on the NZHistory.net website. Will they have to update this too – and why doesn’t the ‘new flag’ design incorporate the fine ferns on the coat of arms instead of the cartoon frond
ps I originally reproduced the Coat of arms here – but on reading this properlyThe Coat of Arms can only be used or published with the Ministry’s permission. If you have any questions about using the Arms please contact us.
thought I’d best just link to a graphic of it – strange times and all that…
pps whatever happened to the wonderfully named Department of Tourist and Health Resorts.
