Fear facts strikes again
The media is complicit in spreading misinformation – great example in Stuff today re Metiria Turei getting into the spirit of things with tweets and pix at the Hunt for the Wilderpeople premiere
see:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/78402308/green-party-coleader-metiria-tureis-wild-night-out-at-hunt-for-the-wilderpeople
with photos of her fooling around in a truck – which Stuff extrapolates into her drinking in ‘her’ truckShe eventually sorted out the camera, but then had some trouble getting out of her truck and onto the red carpet – which she graciously shared for everyone to see.
coupla factual errors there – it was a ‘green’ carpet and the truck wasn’t hers it was photo op prop at the premiere – some people have no sense of humour…
see:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/78394828/hunt-for-the-wilderpeople-enjoys-kiwi-premiereThe red carpet became green with the outback themed premiere for the ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ at Sylvia park.
<edit>Hah! after I commented to stuff about this they have now changed it to read:
She eventually sorted out the camera, but then had some trouble getting out of the promotional Toyota Hilux ute on display at the premiere and onto the red carpet - which she graciously shared for everyone to see.
hopefully that takes some of the vitriol out of the comments section

Looks like Fairfax is just a cog in Mediaworks machine as well - this week's 'issue' of the TV listings guide The Box has ostensibly 4 pages of 'content' including the cover - a third of a page has a round-up of 'shows to watch, the rest (cover and three articles) is all devoted to TV3's The Good Wife - how useful and informative.

Hard News: Media Take: Crime and punishment, in reply to
I’ve often wondered about these meth testing and cleaning companies.
One also wonders if the tests may be finding something else that might trigger a positive result, and at what proportions?
What other evidence needs to be presented before the expensive 'cleansing process' kicks in?
Who benefits?
...and who do they know, or inform?http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/300181/meth-tests-now-'standard'-property-manager
there only seem to be very loose 'guidelines' and paranoia - some of it laid out here:
http://www.methsolutions.co.nz/what-is-a-safe-level-of-meth/I'd be more worried about other normal household chemical spills, diesel and black mould in a house - I suspect a good airing and wipe down would more than likely do the job - heck if it's okay for the government to leave sequestered asbestos in houses in Chchch without noting it on the LIM, anything goes, right?

Polity: The Taxpayers' Union rides again!, in reply to
Is there any effective means to combat how they operate, as logic, facts and research seems to fail?
It is a shame that a Truth-tellers Union isn't the obvious antidote.
I find it odd that they presume to speak for all 'Taxpayers' without proving that they have a critical mass of taxpayers as their membership.
Can we know how much tax the board and members pay?also interesting that one of their stated aims is reining in excessive government spending - while one of their board members " is a sales executive for the software company the SAS Institute (NZ) Ltd" - which I'm sure i've seen posts hereabouts alleging everything they touch costs more than it should
...and well, David Farar - can we know how much Government money goes into his coffers for services rendered - often needlessly as far as I can see - Curia sir and curiouser...
and John Bishop - he whose conservatively maudlin maunderings has many a time brought me near to defenestrating the radio when he appears on Radio NZ's the Panel
oh yes they are all well impartial, hah!

Speaking of Rentiers - this talk is on tonight in Chchch
hopefully it's not too late to registerRentier Capitalism and the coming Precariat Revolt: Professor Guy Standing
You are warmly invited to this event which will be held at 6:00pm on Wednesday 30 March at The Fern Room, The Atrium, 455 Hagley Avenue, Christchurch.
Professor Guy Standing is the author of The Precariat and The Precariat Charter. He will speak at this event on his upcoming book Rentier Capitalism and the coming Precariat revolt. This presentation will focus on how the precariat is uniquely disadvantaged by rentier capitalism, and on what an appropriate income distribution system could and should be like if it is to respond to the incipient revolt of the precariat. The first premise of the talk is that there can be no return to the labourism that underpinned social democracy and welfare states in the 20th century. The second is that the precariat will provide the leadership and energy of a new progressive politics.
Guy Standing is Professor of Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and a founder member and honorary co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN),an international non-governmental organisation that promotes basic income, whose members include economists, philosophers and other social scientists from over 50 countries. All welcome.
