We're putting housing developments over our best growing soils round Chchch. and further down the plains they're selling the water extraction rights until 2046 to some firm to sell it to China

The Ashburton District Council is selling a section in its business estate, known as Lot 9, for an undisclosed sum. It comes with a valuable resource consent that allows abstraction of water from aquifers beneath the town.
The council has refused to publicise information about the deal, which is understood to be with an overseas company.
    ...
Ashburton often has issues supplying water during the summer. In some areas, water restrictions banned residents from using hoses to water their gardens.
When applying for the consent, the council came to an arrangement with meat processor Silver Fern Farms, allowing it to deepen its bore if Lot 9's water abstraction caused groundwater levels to reduce.

I see 'Captain Transparency' (aka the PM) has let any idiots who didn't know NZ had some small amounts of nuclear material in on the secret - trumpeting it on the Paul Henry show (where he also broke parliamentary protocol by announcing his Washington trip on air before letting his cabinet know officially), on his Facebook page and in self congratulatory press releases before leaving Washington...

I won't link to them, but the damage is done, nice one, John!

I see Fairfax and Stuff being helpful to their readers again by running their 'pre tour interview' with Brian Wilson a week after the concert - sigh

It was in the hard copy Sunday today also - at least they got Randle McMurphy spelled correctly in the print edition.

I'm guessing it wasn't in the Fairfax Events promotions portfolio - a shot across the bows to other promoters perhaps?

    Sticks and stones...

It seems to me Labour hasn’t thought any of this through properly, but other people have, for many years – and that Labour has just gone on gooey eyed at the leftie celebrity economist they brought out to their conference.

They never said they had 'thought it through', just that they wanted to start a discussion on it - you know a civilised one where people don't dismiss other people's points of view out of hand with phrases like 'leftie celebrity economist' - by whom I assume you mean Robert Reich - who was 'right' enough for republican President Gerald Ford, and for Time magazine to name him one of the Ten Best Cabinet Members of the century, etc... - and he endorses Bernie Sanders for President - sounds like a man with his head screwed on , not up, to me.

But hey go ahead, keep tossing those dead cats and cherry-picked faux facts into the 'conversation'.

Speaking of job losses to technology – I see a gap in the market for some crossover between Syft technologies and modern ‘high end’ Japanese toilets

Everyone could have a diagnostic toilet – there would be an app of course – but imagine the long term health savings…
Our personal microbiome needs a voice too…

Sorry for the diversion, as you were, back to the topic at hand…

If you’ve ever looked closely at the dried rings whisky leaves behind in a glass, you may be among the few who’ve noticed just how stunningly beautiful they can be. But what’s behind whisky’s “particle patterning”?

Initially, the droplet of alcohol-water solution creates a complex mixing flow. Ethanol evaporates first, due to the lower vapor pressure compared to water and, once the ethanol vanishes, a radial pattern can be observed. Further, as the initial ethanol concentration increases, the mobility of the receding contact line is increased as well. And, at high ethanol concentrations, the contact line recedes and draws groups of particles along with it that are then deposited in a ring-shaped pattern.

  • Legal Beagle: The flag referendum:…,

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11615542

Just how did John Key get two of the biggest names in rugby to back his failed flag campaign?
It could have been as simple as a text message.
Former All Black captain Richie McCaw and Dan Carter, currently World Rugby Player of the Year, were texted by the Prime Minister and asked to watch his video promoting a change of New Zealand flag. They both went on to publicly support the campaign for change just weeks before voting began last month.
    ...
Mr Eagleson said it was unclear whether Mr Key was texting in his role as Prime Minister, or in some other capacity which would mean the text messages were private. Rather than make a call on which role he was in while texting, Mr Key had volunteered the information.

    The tosh keeps coming...
