  • Hard News: Can we get an adult up in here?, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Would you be asking the question if this was a Murdoch tabloid publishing the credit card details of Greenpeace donors? As Russell said, I fail to see even the most feeble public interest defense of publishing anyone’s credit card details.

The question Rich asked was whether we were holding wikileaks responsible for anonymous' actions (which would be tenuous to outright ridiculous).

You've then said you'd hold a tabloid responsible for doing what anonymous did, and implied wikileaks should therefore be held responsible.

I don't think it's the public interest you're failing to see.

A more appropriate simile would be holding the dom post responsible for what the sunday star times has published. Or really, holding a newspaper responsible for the myspace page of a 14 year old.

  • Hard News: Finally, the Teapot Tape?,

All good, I didn't mean to come across as the thought police or anything.

The freedom index rating we had was always a bit iffy, like the corruption rating that we keep getting. I think it's strongly correlated with how much attention we get - ie, if there's no news, people assume there is no news.

can we avoid implying we'd like nasty things to happen to anyone please - even if they are people we thoroughly disagree with.

eta: perhaps especially when they are people we thoroughly disagree with.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to Danielle,

    Yeah, I can see that.

I guess it doesn’t register on my dickish scale(tm)* because I’m too busy finding reassurance that it’s not just me who thinks the conformity enforced by the modern professional environment is weird. Especially because it’s conformity to a lifestyle I don’t enjoy :P

Uhunno, I’m struggling to think of something that is both provocative and not slightly dickish. Maybe that’s the definition.

*guaranteed to classify 15cm as 10 inches, and not even commenting on where the rub is (sorry we can't spend this long talking about dicks without someone visiting the gutter).

  • Hard News: Word of the Year 2011 -- The Vote!, in reply to Russell Brown,

it’s that it had a particular resonance this year in the context of #eqnz.

I'm with Matthew - the entire fricking year is munted, not just #eqnz.

The sheer weight of meaning taken for granted within the hashtag #eqnz is munted. Japan leaking radioactivity into the pacific is munted. America teetering on the edge of open rebellion is munted. Hell, there were random riots in the mother country this year and no-one can quite explain why just yet. Shit is munted.

  • Hard News: The Next Labour Leader, in reply to DexterX,

Should National’s paltry majority coalition govt fall apart will Labour’s new dynamic leadership duo prove up to the task of convincing the electorate that they are up for “it”.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to Danielle,

Because the concept of dickishness is culturally defined and the precept thereby works to silence those who don’t conform to that culture.

Ah but I embrace it as an ever-evolving means of categorising what, for me, boils down to not that far different from the new testament interpretation of the old testament rules laid down – and conveniently, the same basic precepts that underly most well intentioned religions, as far as I have understood them. Ie, what I’ve figured out for myself over my time on earth about making shit work as well as possible for everyone.

If you’re making an argument based on personal interpretation invalidating wider intention, we may come to (friendly) blows :)

ETA: and I don’t think I could be more overt about wanting to discuss that with Gio if he thinks otherwise about it.

ETA2: after reading Russell's comment - Gio's riff on "Well-adjusted" rates as one of the major things in the last year to make me seriously re-think everything, in a good way.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to giovanni tiso,

(and I could write a book about “don’t be a dick”, I really could)

Umm, I know I'm interrupting something, but can we have that book? Or the discussion and debate that makes that book?

As someone who has basically built his life around that precept (after finding religion and sport a bit useless), I'd be keen. Maybe on BBB?
