  • Hard News: Spring Timing, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

A distraction it may be but it is also part of reasonably long National tradition of getting out in front of some issues so they can't be boxed into a right/left or young/old debate on an issue. Jim Bolger did this with his musings on the inevitably of NZ becoming a republic. If they would only realise it, these things also give the Left some freedom to debate matters that don't have to fit into the standard political template. One other might be providing proper protection to the street prostitutes of Christchurch who appear to be at the mercy of predators like the Mongrel Mob while carrying out their business.

  • Hard News: Spring Timing,

"I've now been told by two people that the timing has been influenced by a sharp dip in National's (and Key's) internal polling. It's sure not showing in the public polls."

I can't see the connection with a September poll date. They'll lose by less than if they wait for November?

  • Hard News: Crashing the party before it starts,

The internet party and the ACT party seem to have incompetence in common, Although the ACT party was successful initially over time and devolved to incompetence, the internet party seems to have begun at that point. Will the next step be an attempted takeover by Don Brash?

That must be why Labour and the Greens find it impossible to recruit staff from the Gallery!

  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I suspect that whatever one's political persuasion we hate gladiatorial politics when our side is losing the contest and not so much when our side is winning. Helen Clark was more combative in Parliament than any leading politician post Muldoon and far more than John Key has been. In opposition and as PM she had the ability to start and finish a good parliamentary battle. There were few qualms from her supporters when she did so. Ditto Russel Norman who is a particularly vicious political scrapper. Parliamentary battles, especially question time, represent a significant evolutionary advance as they are the symbolic equivalent of the Game of Thrones when the battles were all too real.

  • Hard News: Tooled Up for Food,

    Attachment

I can’t remember who it was, but to the person in the food/equipment session a couple of weeks ago who recommended the steel frying pans from the Dunedin engineering firm (Southern Engineering, perhaps?), thank you very much. Our cast iron ones have been relegated to the second team. Very good at both frying and simmering for risotto/sauce and, as recommended, the handle doesn’t get hot. It is much lighter than the cast iron versions we have used for so long. Very cheap at $30 for the one in the picture.
