Thanks, Professor Schama - and in my not so humble opinion, both the United Kingdom and little old New Zealand have a lot of shit to clean up in our own backyards before going anywhere else and sniffing at the natives.

For once, Craig, on this point, I agree with you. I think even criticizing the evil Yanquis is giving them more attention than they deserve. They will not listen, have to learn the hard way, and so be it. We would be better off attending to our own shop. They are welcome to their ridiculous country and war.

the big decision is really "how long do you want the average wait to be?"

Personally? 0 days, 0 hours, 0 mins, 0 seconds. Which is exactly what happened last year when my newborn son had a stroke shortly after birth and nearly died. There was no pissing around with insurance companies, just a child being fixed up by the best people in NZ, because that's what decent doctors, and decent systems, do. I couldn't give a stuff if occasionally some machines lie idle. That's the fat that's built into a system which prioritizes life and happiness over profits.

    International:

-You got me on the movies. There's so many on Sky it's hard to avoid.
-'Listening' is stretching it. Hearing is even possibly taking it too far. It's amazing what the brain can learn to filter.
-I've got nothing against employing Chinese textile workers
-What's "their" about something I had to make myself, out of supposedly 100% NZ products? I think that was the lowest point in my employment history.
-They don't make coffee. I did once drink a soapy vanilla milkshake with coffee written on the side at Starbucks though, so you've got me there.
-I suppose not going to war with the US is technically accepting their dictates. We're also accepting everyone else's dictates in that case.

Danielle, no worries. I'm having issuez recently too, and have low tolerance for silly yank shenanigans. But of course the place is of interest, and not everyone there is a moron. Just making my point that we do pay them far more attention than they are really due. Sorry if the tone was rough.

Sigh. Which is why the left will keep on losing in the US - they keep trying to patronise people into submission. 'You should listen to me, dumbass!' doesn't really work that well, oddly enough.

Sigh. Not everyone lives in the US, or even gives a shit about the place.

...and Galbraith's in Auckland do a highly authentic best bitter.

Heh, I sure felt authentically bitter after tasting it, remembering exactly why I don't like beer! Must try it warm and flat, just to see if can get any more disgusting.

In the end, SiCKO doesn't really rate for me (except for the Cuban hospital and fire station sequences), but it has to be considered in the light of the effect it will have on American viewers/consumers.

Or you could ignore American viewers/consumers as the modern enigma they have become. Guessing how something stupid will affect someone foolish is not as easy to guess as you might think. eg Iraq. I'm not about to dumb myself down just so I can hope to speak to them at their level. There's been more than enough of that recently. eg Tony Blair. Look where it got him and Britain.

<quote> Who but American teenagers isn't already well aware of how crap the US health system is?

    American adults, probably.

    </quote>

Healthy ones, anyway. Then again, maybe even the sick and shat on still think it would have been worse elsewhere.

Moore's smart enough to realise that, in an era where it's seen as some kind of positive that the President can barely string a sentence together, pitching to teenage is an effective way to convey his message.

Or maybe they're the only ones listening.

I am in the same boat, and then my friends who do not give a rats arse about politics, the enivironment, the war on terror all of a sudden start talking about climate change and Gore, guns and Michael Moore.

And I then feel the need to rethink my arrogant criticisms.

Or your friends :-). But yes, it does seem that either the world has dumbed down incredibly during my life, or I've wised up. I find the latter hard to believe.

But I think it's the best film Moore has made

It helps that he sets himself such a low bar.

    Not just himself

For all the criticism - Moore still hist the targets like no one else.

That's an indictment on the state of US political documentaries.

I find myself generally aligned with Moore's views and horribly unimpressed by his presentation of them. It's like hearing something you've known for years explained to you by a teenager who's just heard about it. Perhaps that's his target audience. Totally unsubtle and hamfisted is how I'd describe the ones I've seen before and it puts me off this one. Who but American teenagers isn't already well aware of how crap the US health system is?

Good on him for saying it, though, someone's got to.
