  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

My understanding of the time stats was that if I go and read an essay that is on a single page, and take two hours to do it, then either close the browser tab or exit the page via anything other than a link on the page itself, it counts as a visit with a duration of zero seconds. I may be wrong, but that's how it was explained to me.

This is exactly right and it's a total pain in the arse. When you're supposed to report on 'time on site' as a measure, and you know that it's essentially meaningless ...

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

Wired on the iPad is superb. Have happily given up the paper version to subscribe to this one. Also the BBC (free) iPad version is excellent to use.

Seems the iPad is ideal for the magazine format. Will pay for the convenience and ease of use.

Paying for news though, when it's out there for free in so many places - that's a tougher proposition.

  • Hard News: Our kitchen sink was a…,

It has to be said, if you thought watching Pukemanu on NZ On Screen was a fine thing to do this weekend (and indeed it should be), then sit back and enjoy this fine selection of 50 years of Kiwi TV Gold released on NZ On Screen this afternoon:
    http://www.nzonscreen.com/collection/kiwi-tv-classics

There's a lot of 'where we came from' moments in there, but I have to say my personal fav is the weather segment in the "Reading the News" compilation: http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/reading-the-news-1966

    Enjoy!

  • Hard News: Paul Reynolds: A Contribution,

I too met Paul in the mid 90s, when he was so encouraging of webgrrls, the web, the possibilities. We had many excellent conversations then and many more over the years.

Most recently he has been a strong supporter of and advocate for NZ On Screen, keenly petitioning for the embedding functionality on the site and promoting us through his networks.

I'll miss him, the country will miss him, he was a wonderful man.

  • Hard News: Apple-pie Embedding,

Then overzealous administrators decided that she was a spammer, blocked her account, threw a bunch of loosely applied rules at her, and removed the lot. I'll reinstate as much as I can, but it will take a while.

It's a shame, because there is some wonderful and valuable content there.

Thanks George - I do appreciate your support. I'm still smarting about my whole Wikipedia experience. I do feel that the NZ On Screen content adds value to Wikipedia articles, it is a shame that it has been disallowed. Actually was part of a very interesting discussion with people from various cultural institutions today - talking about the content we create and how it is made freely available, at the same time retaining some kind of ownership over it. Wikipedia's approach of 'put your content into our articles or you can't be here' really doesn't work for everyone.

Material was excised from Wikipedia by Wikipedia administrators?

Or from NZOS by NZOS administrators?

Material that had been added by NZOS was excised by Wikipedia administrators.

The part that grates mostly is that links to YouTube videos, many of which are illegal, are retained - and as Russell says, IMDB even has its own shortcode!

Anyway ... NZ On Screen and embeds - it is a growing list, starting small. Kowhai, the fossik will be relatively fruitless initially :) So far there are a few obscure things that can be embedded, but probably most relevant to this audience:

    In A Land of Plenty
    Someone Else's Country
    1951
Heavenly Pop Hits - the Flying Nun Story

We know that there is a problem embedding into any wordpress.com -hosted site. That's a bit out of our control, but we're working on it.

We also know that you can't effectively resize the player - a decision we made deliberately, but we're open to feedback on whether that is appropriate - I can already see that it causes problems in the PA format!

    So - enjoy!

  • Hard News: Truth to Power, etc,

So I heard. I deliberately avoided that session as I would only have got irate and everyone would have said, "There goes that Geoff Lealand again..."

No biting the hand that feeds ... those guys will defend a flawed system to the hilt if it means they get to keep getting funding.

IMO it comes back to 2 main things:
    - how is 0.03% (apparently i was .02% out) a representative sample
    - how does the behaviour of people who will willingly use the people meter system, reflect the behaviour of any other "normal" person or the many many "non-normals" who might have other preferences!

  • Hard News: Truth to Power, etc,

Incidentally, Brenda, I greatly appreciated your attack on the implausibility of TV ratings at the SPADA debate.

Thanks! Apparently the ratings people defended their place hotly the following morning, but people I spoke to remained unconvinced.

I'm putting a different twist on it for the NDF next week :)

NZ On Screen has just released a collection of 21 music videos either featuring or directed by Chris Knox.

The collection features background pieces written by Roger Shepherd and Russell Brown and links to his website and the Stroke album.

Enjoy the Chris Knox music video Collection
