  • Lara,

Like Robert, I'm fairly unaffected so far (apart from work in the CBD) - we live on the west side of the city in the Halswell area. September was therefore much worse for us in terms of liquefaction etc. This time around has been much harder on my mental health, but I think I'm getting there. Roads have not been much of an issue - I bike or use the bus.

Again, its a 'what can I do?' Apart from offering 'time out to look at the horses in the paddock & pick walnuts & apples', not very much it would seem. I have a friend with no water or loo yet & she is escaping as often as possible to her Mum's place north of the city.

I was born in Dunedin (1988), but have lived in Christchurch since 1991. I love Wellington & Dunedin, but get homesick for the plains, the mountains, the people very quickly.

Every summer since I left Canterbury, I had found myself homesick for the plains. Mostly I envisage the road between Christchurch and ashburton, and the way it shimmers in the distance in the heat.

I miss the alps too. In Wellington, I often feel hemmed in by the hills. And the geography of the city still boggles me. I can navigate by the port hills, but I just can't do that in welly.

When I was in Wellington recently i tried to use the google maps app on my phone to find the place I was meant to be meeting friends. it kept telling me to head south but, without the port hills, I had no idea where south was.

You mileage may vary. To me, the hills are natural fortifications.
