    A croq', Monsieur?

    Please, no ham and cheese.

Wee Willie Winkie runs through the town,
Upstairs and downstairs in his nightgown,
Tapping at the window and crying through the lock,
Are all the children in their beds, it's past eight o'clock?

  • Islander,

"Wee Willie Winkie" was originally in Scots English, and was a very early version of "Now Go the F**k to Sleep"

"Wee Willie Winkie rins through the town
Up stairs and doon stairs in his nicht-gown
Tirling at the window, crying at the lock
Are the weans in their bed, for it's now ten o clock?

and one of the 3 following verses that show "NGTFTS" is nae a new thing-

"Onything but sleep, you rogue! glow'ring like the moon,
Rattling in an airn jug wi' an airn spoon,
Rumbling, tumbling round about, crawing like a cock,
    skirling like a kenna-what, wauk'ning sleeping fock."

It's actually a lovely wee rhyme and was written by one William Miller. We'd love to claim him but it is a very common name in Scotland, and elsewhere.

Al has been a huge help.

And if you'd all like to put your hippy-dippy positive energies together and try to ensure I get well again before Thursday, that'd be awesome.

I’ve just resurrected my Nanna’s voice and ‘nicht-gown’ was pronounced by her as something rather like ‘nig*ht-y gown’ with some indescribable glottal going on at *-
o hell, why didnt we have small recorders around while the olds still were? Mary Ann Yorston Matches was born here in the 1880s – her husband, from a well-known Kai Tahu family, was born nearly ten years before her- and I only have their voices in my head- which is not a safe repository…

  • Jackie Clark,

I too send you healing energy, Emma. And I would send you Ruby because she has very special magic powers. She can put a smile on anyone's face. I suspect your cat wouldn't be happy but. So plain old woowoo vibes it is.

Islander, thanks for that. I'll be practicing my glottal stop.
