    Don't drink and ride

They should get you to make the cautionary public campaign, with descriptive powers like that

OK, I’ll upgrade to “Get a good Android”.

i'm constantly running appkiller, and have been reliably told that the high-end ones also have crap battery life.

although, i have dropped it on the corner and the screen didn't shatter. this already makes it better than an iPhone4.

It does chew fast when you're using it heaps. Particularly when you're using all the wireless features and running multiple apps - so when I was running DJStudio to mix some sounds in my car whilst also using the GPS, and foraging for Wifi hotspots, checking my mail, and running Skype and Twitter, the car charger could only just keep up. But I've found if I charge it every day, it's got enough even without the car charger. The mains charger is next to my bed - this is the first phone I've slept with.

Yay! A pissing contest about multitools.

They're almost an essential tool in theatre... I've had one on my belt for over 20 years... Gerbers... Meh... they break. I reckon the steel has been hardened to the point of brittleness.

For the last 10 years Ive had one of these. Best tool I've ever owned... and I've used every function at least once... although I wish it had a thingy for getting the stones out of horses hooves... just in case:)

Barnes, you'd like the Swiss Tool's ability to be used as a set square... just brilliant... and it's square too (be a bit bloody useless if it wasn't!).

  • Islander, in reply to Steve Withers,

I did look at the Schrade multitool because I have an excellent Schrade folder (a CH7, the one with a very useful half&half blade*) but the bloody thing was HUGE.
I want something that does a reasonable range of tasks; is comfortable to work with, and which can slip into my pocket (or clip unobtrusively onto my waistband.)
The Juice XE6 is all those - and Leatherman solved the cuts-into-your hand when using pliers things ages ago.

    *Knife nut since age 7.

Now, that's an interesting multitool...will stick with current one tho.'It has almost all of those functions, and a couple of useful others (corkscrew*, and blade with metal-file and diamond hone.) The rule and square would be very useful in theatre I'd imagine?

Confession: I do carry a Swiss Card Lite in my credit card wallet.

*You have no idea how often it's been called upon. There's still plenty of wine out there that isnt screw-capped.

Karl laughed at me the first time I brought my iPhone to bed with me. He's not laughing now. (For a long time, it had just three aps on it: Twitter, Carcassonne, and World Cup Cricket scoring. One of these is very handy in the middle of the night.)

The ruler is amazingly useful... it does have a metal file... and I have been known to file my nails with it too!

I've found the trouble with corkscrews on multitools, is that they catch as you put the tool into pocket or pouch...

  • Rich of Observationz,

My phone has data turned off when roaming (I assume iPhones can also do this) to avoid roaming charges.

I can't quite see how if I was stuck in an earthquake/supervolcano eruption/nuclear disaster I would be able to either purchase thousands of dollars of prepay credits, or alternatively get a local SIM).

Until roaming charges become sensible, a lot of the utility of smartphones is lost, at least for those of ordinary means.

Did someone say iPhone coffee? There's an app, or two, for that.

ETA: "Next time Android Coffee Apps". Pfft.

The corkscrew on the Juice doesnt catch (smug smile) - it's a really well-designed little number - 8.2cm long, 3 cm wide, and 2.1cm deep...no idea what they cost now,
but when one of the whanau brought it in from USA for me, it was $160 (ANZ.)

O, and Jackie C - one of my nieces is desperately envious of you!

They (multitools) seem to inspire almost fanatical loyalty... all I work with have them, and they're all equally passionate about the relative merits of their 'cutlery'... especially when liquored... which I'm sure is more than a little scary to the uninitiated. I doesn't help that we can seem to be speaking a different language sometimes :)

Nah, she’s got a 3rd generation iTouch – she sneers at my 5th gen. iPod Nano- what she wants is the latest – *your’s!* And what she wants she generally gets because – she goes out and works for it (restocking shelves at the local supermarket after school…) coming up 18, bright as all get out, dominant as hell (like all te whanau)and headed for a career as a medical researcher (her choice.)
