  • Craig Ranapia,

But being incredibly stupid was part of Jason's character wasn't it?

Sure, but being a badly damaged APB was Joey Tribiani's defining character beat as well. It worked on Friends for ten years because he was actually a well-developed and coherent type working in an ensemble. Dumb as a post, feeding a tape worm and viagra for blood. Then he got his own show, and the writers quickly found out it didn't actually work if Joey was not only a congenital idiot but the smartest person in any given room most of the time. So, you've have this damn painful Flowers for Algernon mood swings where he'd pick up and drop fifty IQ points from line to line, depending on what was required to pay off the gag,

  • Graeme Edgeler,

There are plenty, but apart from Toni Collette, who has enough personalities to contend with, who would you suggest for this?

Without having seen it, and recognising that the show might be different/worse with someone else, actresses well-placed to play women (with teenage children) with things for younger guys might include 45 y.o. Teri Hatcher (or some other Desperate Housewives alumna, such as 46 y.o. Nicollette Sheridan), or 53 y.o. Kim Cattrall.

That said, I don't know that I'm suggesting these people so much as disputing the implication there weren't other "older" women TV actresses.

Don't think I actually said that. I was thinking specifically for this role, and struggled to find someone who hadn't already been so type-cast as to make the cringe set in before even starting. Having said that; Parker Posy? Mary-Louise Parker? Helen Hunt? Lucy Liu? Cameron Diaz? Meh.

Frankly any suggestion of Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner or Jeniffer-Jason Leigh would have me reaching for the remote. And no, I don't have a thing against Jennifers per se.

Speaking of Joey and Housewives, Drea de Matteo! Now you mention it, I could probably live with that.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Actually, I just checked the listings, and the final is on Thursday, only half a day after the US. Good effort, TVNZ.

Final in the US was on Monday our time - their Sunday - I think. I banned some of my facebook friends from mentioning it. So far so good.

Our final is on Saturday evening. 9.30 - midnight.

You're talking about Lost. I was talking about... um... another show.

American Idol. Which has been absolute cack this season. And can only get worse with Cowell disappearing.

  • 3410,

You're not wrong, Philip. What they need to do is intensive workshopping of contestants during the season. That way they might actually improve each week.

As for Cowell, yes, it'll be rubbish without him.

  • Hilary Stace,

I found out what happened at the end of Lost. As I haven't watched one episode in 6 years it didn't mean much to me. But sounded interesting. Sort of timely.

I take it that means an extra half hour of delightful advertising in a two hour show. Or will tack on a Reunion Special like Survivor does?

  • B Jones,

Yeah. It's described by the makers as a 2.5 hour show, but the usual "1 hour" episodes are only 40 minutes of actual tv. Friends in the US would tell you that it's about 103 minutes long...

It probably goes without saying, but can we have a no spoilers policy here until it screens?

Lost: Penultimate tonight and full final

    Saturday evening. 9.30 - midnight

so I'm inclined to give TVNZ kudos for not dragging out the finale this final season and reducing the days of fingers-in-ears-lalalala-i-can't hear-you...

    Please. No saying.

    Aww. Hmmm ... just one?

John Locke is really a fictional High School in the final ever episode of Law & Order. Freaky.

Can we ruin the final episodes of other show for you, though?

In the final episode of ALF, ALF gets captured by the Alien Task Force. To be continued...

Cancellation comes as somewhat of a surprise. There's later a TV movie without any of the actors from the show.

In the final episode of Sledge Hammer, the city gets destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Except this time renewal comes as a surprise, so the second series is a prequel.

In the final episode of JAG (watched by more people than the final of Lost) the main characters get engaged.

Nah... I'm really not inclined to give anyone kudos for enlightened self-interest. Any more than I'm willing to give kudos to the BBC (finally) pulled head out of corporate arse and realised there were a lot of people out there who are less likely to torrent Doctor Who if they're only waiting weeks -- as opposed to months. (For that matter, what possible motivation did I have to watch seasons two and three of BSG on C4 when I'd already thrashed the shit out of the DVDs?)

  • Jackie Clark,

Since we're covering TV, to be honest I found the new RadiRadiRah a bit blah de blah blah.

I also thought it was a bit disappointing. I love 7Days. Always a delight.

I'm half-heartedly supporting Bowersox: I proclaim her to be the least offensive.

Oh, I love her. She makes me cry whenever she sings, which is why it's such a goddamn shame she's on a show like Idol where the format means she's a bit compromised.

  • Steve Barnes,

..and the recent Prime series didn't really change my lukewarm opinion of much of their work. I agree that some of it hasn't dated well--especially their portrayals of screechy harridans (they didn't seem to like women much). I have warmer memories of Spike Milligan's Q and really going back, Hancock.

Monty Python was a product of its time and was heavily influenced by both Hancock and Milligan.
I have a friend who actually despises all British humour, he is a Kiwi Easty Boy (you know who you are ;) and speaks highly of McFail and Gadsby, who seem to have influenced Rahderahderubbish.

  • BenWilson,

I'm currently finding everyone in Cougar Town funny except Cox. But she's the bulk of it so I'm not sure if it's worth one more go.

As for Lost I'm expecting to feel after the last episode rather like I did when I got to lvl 60 in Warcraft - "Thank fuck that's finished <uninstall>".

  • B Jones,

I'd like 7Days a lot more if all their jokes relating to women didn't have "hur hur you're a slut" as the punchline. Or by way of variation, "hur hur I'm a slut" if they let a girl on the show. I know that sort of thing is apparently as essential to the world of humour as falling down and custard down the pants, but it gets tired pretty quickly. The rest of it, often original and unexpected.

  • Rich Lock,

Managed to get my wife to watch a few Monty Python eps recently, having studiously avoided it for decades as pretentious, over-rated tosh.

Coming to it with a fresh pair of eyes, she noted that some of the devices they used were decades ahead of their time: ending a skit halfway through and simply moving on to another sketch, knowingly flagging the punchline (lucky I didn't tell them about the dirty knife!).

She reckoned you'd have trouble getting a lot of that sort of stuff commissioned now, let alone back in the 1970's. Especially relevant in light of B Jones's comments above: Hur hur, custard in pants, man gets hit in crotch by football, etc.

So while it is certainly of it's time, it does have to be remebered that at that time, it would have hit people like a slap in the face (possibly with a wet fish). What was the alternative? Terry and bloody June? The good life? Hyacinth Bucket?

And while we're talking about Lost:

Kate wakes up to find Daniel, Boone, Miles, Michael, Ana Lucia, Charlotte, Frank, Shannon, Desmond, Eko, Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Locke, Ben, Sayid, Libby, Sun, Jin, Claire, Hurley, Juliet, Charlie, Richard, Bernard, Rose and Vincent in the shower, together with Bob and Pam Ewing, and realises that the storylines of the three preceding seasons were nothing more than a lengthy dream sequence.

Sorry to spoil it for you.

  • recordari,

For the record, it was Bob Newhart, and they were in bed.

And don't go searching for it until after the final, cause while it is clearly ridicolous, it will take you to places that involve spoilers.

    You have been warned.
