  • Rob Hosking,

Isn't 'What a friend we have in Jesus' the song that's sung at the start of Heavenly Creatures?

    Not quite.
It's 'Just a Closer Walk with Thee'. I think its originally a Negro Spiritual which got taken over. I remember my parents had a late 50s country version of it.

I find it disturbing, or something, that the only thing I can really contribute to a discussion about drugs is info about a religious song.

I took a couple of blueys once, at a party, and was very silly and then very paranoid, and vowed never again: marijuana makes me giggle a lot, which is OK, but it also badly aggravates my asthma, so that's out.

I shall stick to the lager and the single malts, and a few nice wines, but you folk have your fun in your own way...

heh. i was offered pcp at a party many years ago.

a quick bit of research revealled the side effects; potential nerve damage, inability to reason, blah blah blah. the che wasn't touching the stuff, wasted as he already was.

Yes. I've never been squeamish about these things, but PCP and datura never seemed like a good bet.

I once read somewhere that PCP stands for Pussy Cat Pituitary. Is that why dogs chase cats?

  • Riddley Walker,

datura is really bad stuff, unless you're fond of bleeding from your eyes, ears and nose all at once while having a bad bad trip. there's a good reason why despite it being so plentiful around AKL you don't see many people harvesting it.

It's the phrase/statement "a quick bit of research revealled the side effects" that has me perplexed/bemused. I can't shake the mental image of Che in a kitchen at a party being offerred PCP by some ne'er-do-well (obviously a pimp hoping to hook young Che on the hard stuff, condemning him into a life of hustling) at which point Che decides to conduct a "a quick bit of research" and calls out to those in the lounge 'I've just been offerred some PCP - who thinks I should do it?'

or worse: Che is offered PCP and responds "Hang on a minute, I'll just google the side-effects" and pulls out a Blackberry from his pocket ...

(Which reminds me of something I once did -- but I'll save it for when RB runs Stories: My Most Marnus Drug Experience)

  • Mrs Smith,

When people say they don't do drugs, I am always reminded of the line from "Fire, Walk With Me;' "Caffeine's a drug. Nicotine's a drug." I readily admit, that people such as myself who are hopelessly reliant on both, do not tend to chew off people's faces, or savage small children. Well, if they do, I don't think it can be blamed on having one flat white too many. BZP (in my diet pills) means I get through a whole day without eating my weight in food, and I am also so much more productive.
There needs to be a public awareness campaign to redress the negative publicity about drugs. Perhaps some heart-warming moments where it shows how nice drugs can be.

it's... it's... like you know me so well, you could be me!

it was exactly that, plus a story one of my adults told me when i was young. it went, "they were at a party, smoked a joint, one was laced with pcp, guy who smoked that bad joint fellovercan'tgetup. therefore pcp=bad"

otherwise? i would have necked that sonofabitch before you can say "say"

  • Hadyn Green,

We had a datura tree in Tauranga and every now and again there were some crazy stoners who would sneak onto our property to grab some.

Dad would ususally go down there and tell them to make sure they didn't bust up his pear tree. I think that shocked them a little, but they were always polite.

Ah yes. A common strategy: don't hit your kids with the blanket statement that "drugs are bad" because that just alienates them. They've probably tried pot and have decided it's harmless. So instead just scare them with stories of evil, nasty drug pushers who lace the joints with PCP to get kids hooked on the hard stuff (which all kids think they'll never do).

That's not to say that some dealers didn't actually lace their weed with additives to accelerate the high, but generally this was only for older 'discerning' druggies looking for an extra kick. Not school kids.

I remember a bouncer/dealer in the late 90's gleefully telling me that his ecstasy was actually just a tablet with a dot of heroin on it. Evidently it was cheaper this way because ecstasy was in short supply and punters didn't know the difference. "As long as it makes them sweat a bit and accelerates their heart beat, they're happy"

based my knowledge of the adult who told me the story, and who it was about, there's a good chance they put the horse tranquiliser in there themselves.

There was a great story about datura at school: "you can only do it three times, if you try a fourth time you'll become braindead"

Yes. I've never been squeamish about these things, but PCP and datura never seemed like a good bet.

There was a teenager in the mid-80s who had (tea I think) datura and walked off the cliff at Murrays Bay, just a couple of blocks from my house.

Anything that removes inhibitions enough that you fall to your death after walking off a cliff, can come off the list of 'a safe high' I think.
