The Capture threads are a phenomenon. It’s like a group of us – Jackson, Jonathan, Matt Buchanan, Gary Henson and me – accidentally designed something great.
Matt created a “photopost” template for Capture, which was also available to other blogs on the site. We also had this primitive legacy file upload feature in comments that no one ever used, but we tried it – and then Matt and Gary realised it needed inline images and turned around that feature in a few hours so we could launch with it. (Gary subsequently came up with the workaround for posting multiple images in a single comment.)
Immediately, readers were having conversations in pictures. The key part of that was Jackson making it clear there would be no photo-snobbery: just post what you’ve taken that seems relevant. That was a really key vision. And as far as I can recall, no one has ever abused that posting privilege.
Some Capture threads are more relevant to me than others, but having them there – and being able to participate – has been brilliant. They encourage me to take pictures and to think about what I’m taking.
NB: This should probably all have been in the main post. Gizza break, dammit.

Thank you, Russell, for the cheerful message. We need moments like this, to counter a feeling that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket. There have been two other such instances this week : reading this morning of a detente between Cuba and the US, brokered by the Pope (as I declared to Josephine this morning, 'It doesn't come easily to me but I am warming to this particular Pope ') ; and being in hall with 900 British media students two days ago, who responded to call from youngGuardian columnist/author Owen Jones,,to stop demonising the poor and challenge the powerful. It is with some surprise (at how old I am) that I count myself amongst the readers here who have been listening to Hard News since it was a rant on bFM in 1991. In my first year at University in 1992 I read the morning news on bFM while Mikey was breakfast host and bumped into Russell most Fridays. Exciting times for a teen into current affairs I must say. Keep it up Russell, I'm still reading, even if from New York City, and 20+ years later.

Public Address is a cultural treasure and Russell and everyone else who has made it what it is should feel a ridiculous level of pride.
As a reader, lurker, and occasional commenter I have learnt so much here, and it has sent me down so many new paths and opened so many new doors.
Please don't stop, ever.

For all that we revere Michael Joseph Savage, it is worth recalling that he not only nationalised all radio, he personally vetted the news radio put to air.
Our radio are so much more independent these days, they don't need the PM to write their copy for them.

Thanks Russell for a stimulating year on Public Address. I have been one of the many lurkers here - this is the first time I've posted - yet I read PA pretty much every day. I agree with your comments regarding this community. Post election it was essential for believing there were still like minds around. Your work is very much appreciated.

And seeing the bigger picture of where this government has pushed us. I thank Nicky Hager for that too. Tremendous effort all round. He deserves person of the year and I hope he has a good break as with all the rest of you. I'll go back to unpacking boxes and boxes and boxes and.....

Old time listener on the B here too. Can I just say that I think your contribution to politics, media and culture in this country has been a wonderful achievement Russell. It has also been a much greater and worthier contribution than that of a certain someone who had one of the first political chat shows in the country and then went on to head TVNZ news and now interminably works the pundit circuit. I speak of course of your voice clone, Bill Ralston.
