Junta is simply the Spanish word for council. See “La Junta de Andalucía” which is the perfectly vote-o-cratic devolved government of Andalucia.
I'm perfectly well aware of that, Rich. In other news, "negro" means black in both Spanish and Portugese, "bitch" is a perfectly acceptable term for a female dog, "faggot" is an archaic term for a bundle of small sticks and I'd still be careful about how I use all of them in general conversation because they also have stunningly offensive connotations. If you're comfortable with people comparing the government of this country to a military dictatorship, that's your look out. I think in the general spirit of amity our host requested, I'll just agree to disagree and leave it there.

can people who are not enrolled cast a special vote on the day?
You can cast it if'n you want. It won't be counted. One could have enrolled up until today, but not tomorrow.
You can enrol online up until midnight tonight.

In the end I decided to vote on the day like others in my family. But I would walk uphill both ways in the snow to vote tomorrow. It feels to me like a historic election, whatever happens, and I really want to be able to say I was there and I voted (I would have voted anyway, but this one feels historic to me).

for people who like to play with data, and compare census demographics with voting, does anyone know of a fairly direct sources of results on the night- ideally one in a form that can be easily automatically read into R as it changes through the evening?

From this distance the last week of the campaign has been like watching one of those super slow mo clips of a balloon exploding, yet to climax.

This is my 8th election and I'll be voting on the day like I have on the last 6. My first, in 1993, I really couldn't wait and so cast a special vote a day early on a whim.
It's the last non-election for my son (he'll be able to vote in the local body elections in 2016) and he's well capable of voting now - strong thoughts on various parties for and against.
I would normally walk up the hill to the local school and vote - I love the way you see people going to and fro the polling booth and know that you're all taking part in the same civic duty. But my wife has quite serious back pains so we'll likely drive there and back. Later a charity quiz and then probably settle down in front of a TV with some friends and some Emersons.

My first election since 1993 I won't be able to vote, thanks to the 3-year rule. Which is ironic, since I don't think I've cared as much about an election since maybe 1999. Do us proud, NZ. We'll be watching.

Took Daniel with us to the polling station (conveniently located four properties up the street), and he posted both our ballot papers. If the "Vote early, vote often" phrase is true, having cast two ballots at age 16-months will hopefully stand him in good stead for a long and vibrant life of democratic involvement.
I'm really not sure what to make of the massive advance vote turnout. If the turnout for yesterday was even the same as the turnout on Thursday, never mind the higher turnout indicated by history, we'll have seen double the advance votes cast this year of 2011.
I am hopeful that it means increased overall turnout, but with a significant un-enrolled proportion and the toxic environment being known to discourage participation it's really hard to tell. I guess we'll find out tonight.Also unsure whether or not to watch the results. Last time I went to bed depressed at what I perceived as the chronic stupidity of my fellow voters.

I voted on Monday when I had a spare 15 minutes on the way home - too many balls in the air at the moment and it was one fewer thing to remember for the rest of the week :)

The good news for Dunedinites is that while snow to 500m is predicted later, we have wonderful blue skies and sunshine at the moment. It's a shorts and jandals day so there's no reason we shouldn't have a high turnout. Happy voting people!

Yes it is a lovely day here in Dunedin, we went up to the local kindy, found somewhere to tie up the dog ..... lots of people seem to be taking their dogs to vote today ....
Voting is sooo easy here in NZ .... I'd watched my partner vote in the US many times .... everything from President to dogcatcher ballots were so complex
And we still get to count ours manually - hooray!

One thing I noticed but which only just clicked was that all the people working the roll books were under 30 at my polling station. That level of engagement is a good thing.
