  • FletcherB,

I have a piece of titanium and 6 screws in my knee, shaped like a 7 and about 8cm on the long side and 5 across the top...

Been to Aussie 2 or 3 times now and never tripped anything... Strange because I have set them off with a forgotten couple of coins or keys...

I'm quite prepared to roll up my trousers and show the scar.... I presume they will be happy if any detectable metal is provably under your skin, as opposed to just inside your clothing?

But then, assuming security checks and logic or reasonableness go together might be a stretch?

Hey granny is getting lazy, there is a story about the green party office posted as 'new' updates at 12.03 and 1.45 under differing headlines, but with verbatim text content. Lift your game granny!

I thought Don Brash did eat babies?

Nope. Strictly corned beef and boiled peas. Which in modern New Zealand, is almost as bad.

So just who is 'this sort of person'? TV1 at mid day reported it was a Somali woman. Someone on PAS says it was a man who was arrested. If it was a Somali man dressed as a woman I think it reasonable to be be fearful this was a terrorist incident.

Pretty clearly a woman, according to the photo here.

I hope that the esteemed Minister for Transport Safety takes into account that one can cause more death and destruction by hijacking your average city bus rather than a small turboprop plane.

That was me. I was quoting from Radio NZ, which made a mistake when it uploaded the audio (the audio didn't say man, but the text description of the audio did). Oops.

  • Margaret,

As a frequent user of the Blenheim airport I am gutted. I like it because it is so easy laid back for someone like me who is a stressy traveller. As far as I know there isn't even a security guard there all the time.

On some of the small planes you don't have to check in any of your luggage, they just cross your name off the list and go when everyone is on.

I've even been on the plane when someone got on by mistake and we had to taxi back in and swap passengers. And you can use your cell phone on board.

Maybe I'll have to start using the Koromiko airport near Picton instead.

Also, I think I've heard of the (tiny) Somalian community in Blenheim as suffering some racism. That's just small town gossip though.

  • Testcard,

That Don was a mean man wasn't he? At least we've got that cuddly John Key who I believe only eats endangered Bird life.

Isn't he single handedly responsible for decimating the Kiwi population?

Strangely enough, one former ACT MP actually had that very idea . Gerry Eckhoff was his name.

ACT environment spokesman Gerry Eckhoff seemed to be on the same wavelength as Dr. Wamsley- he said he had already come up with a recipe for grilled kiwi.

Mr. Eckhoff acknowledged that some peole considered him a “crackpot” for suggesting that NZ privatise the kiwi, but said he believed the only way to save the kiwi was with competent management and large investment.

Obviously a sensitive soul, Eckhoff gave a speech on the subject called 'Having Your Kiwi And Eating It Too'.

A friend just forwarded this to me... suggests we all send it. Not a bad idea?

    Dear Mr Duynhoven

As a frequent traveler I wished to support your calm response to todays incident, and urge that you not be panicked into unnecessary increases in the security theatre that is currently acted out at airports.

I understand the international context that leads to the current situation, and can only imagine how hard it will be to resist without pointing out that the screening we have is only marginally effective, but I am sure it can be done!

I have a sinking feeling they'll have no option but to do something.

After something which has been as publicised as this, if the govt announces its not going to increase security, we'll see a procession of disturbed types pulling stunts like this on provincial flights.

Just because I can, I'd like to report that TBR.cc has painstakingly dissected the incident, in their own inimitable style. The consensus appears to be that we can never ensure perfect safety on small planes, so it's pointless taking steps in that direction. Instead, since these actions are 'imported cultural baggage', we need to think harder about allowing Muslims into the country.

    Astounding.

Well, Paul "Full of Shit" Henry was certainly putting on a bravura performance to that effect last night. Honestly, the guy he had on for the 'interview' might as well not have been there. I thought Paul Holmes was bad, but I see we've now lurched to the O'Reilly school of broadcasting, where guests are just there to shut up and be yelled at by some pig-ignorant fuckwit.

  • Kracklite,

Regarding Perigo and Wishart, please don't take me too seriously on this, but it sure is tempting to draw a parallel with Phneas Gage. There're no visible signs of metre-long tamping irons through their skulls, but maybe they've had undiagnosed strokes?

What is it with certain men who find middle age approaching and suddenly go completely barking? I'm worried enough by my hair migrating from my scalp to my nostrils without this prospect confronting me.

As I said, for legal reasons, don't take this seriously...

To be honest, with small planes, it's not the passengers that are the prime target for a terrorist, it's where you can point the plane on the ground. Full rugby stadiums, government buildings and whatnot.

In which case, passenger airlines are actually much harder than just getting your license yourself and hiring a plane for an hour. Why go through the risk of having to overpower other people for the additional dozen people in your slightly large cesna.
