  • JacksonP, in reply to Chip Matthews,

This was played at the funeral of a friend

The thought has me in tears. Anything by Jeff Buckley has a 'gone too soon' feel to it, but I've always thought his version of Hallelujah would be good.

But I think he took that up a level when he mixed it into 'I know it's over' by The Smiths. Pure angst. And I love it.

    ....I'm 50 years old a week from today. I know, I know, I don't look it -- I'm lucky in that sense -- ....

    Dude ! lols .

My funeral tune ...hmmm maybe .. NWA fk the Police --- may as well go out with a bang. Or maybe Look Know by The fall.
Although so far, best tune chosen here --- Simply Red ..If you don't know me by now --- inspired.

  • Peter Darlington,

My friend Pete Darlington approached such a birthday by choosing a track for every year of his life and giving his friends the mixtape, but he has a librarian's training and I'm not that systematic.

Heh, that damned thing took 18 months and nearly killed me! I do not recommend... The best thing about it was that some mutual friends of ours daughter took ownership of it and promptly started getting into music. The list is here BTW.

  • Jackie Clark,

I had a lovely fan experience recently when I decided that for that set I really needed a high-quality copy of the legendary Bobby Busnach‘s remix of Donna Summer’s ’I Feel Love’

I can't even listen to it. I have joytears prickling at my eyes just thinking about it.

  • JacksonP,

Actually, the other one that resonates is this by Felt, off 'The Pictorial Jackson Review'. Ahem.

I'd play it during a slide show of photos. Well, someone would. Hopefully.

  • Dan Slevin,

I'm told that Peter Sellers chose In the Mood for his funeral:

Inspired by that, my good friend Richard said he'd rather this (and insist on everyone doing the actions):

    As for me, this'll do:

Oh, my mother's funeral. My brothers all heavying the celebrant to make absolutely sure that the version of Hallelujah that got played was the Leonard Cohen, not... well, there were some adjectives applied to Buckley. But it was what she would have wanted. She had that, and "Fields of Gold". A year and a half later, and I still can't listen to either song.

  • James Butler,

For comparison, my Dad went out to most of the Orpheus Choir singing this in Wellington Cathedral. And sometimes I wonder why I find it hard to let go of the whole church funeral thing.

  • Steve Barnes,

In the UK at both my Brothers and my Mothers funerals, a week apart FFS, we had to request and source the music through the Funeral Directors, copyright law don't cha know, so the selection was limited. This just added to the sadness and anger.
Still, nice to know someone was making money out of it all.
    NOT.
We will break the law this weekend and sing "Happy Birthday" to Russ without paying royalties.

That's one advantage to a live-music funeral that I hadn't thought of. At least then even if you do end up paying, you're paying musicians.

Had a friend send footage he took to his parents in the UK. It was his childs birthday.Everyone gathered around and sang "Happy Birthday".
He got an email a short time later with a "take down request" because of the song used.

I considered having 'In the Mood' by Glenn Miller played at my father's funeral, but in the end chose Johnny Cash for carrying out the coffin. Hardly a dry eye..

It's really not about the paying, it's the concept of "Ownership" I have a problem with. All Music is derivative but a performance stands alone, even if you record a performance you are not forcing the musicians to perform again without payment and now that the cost of recording is, virtually, nothing, I see no excuse for profiteering, especially in the case of funerals.

  • Gregor Ronald,

Grateful Dead's "Attics Of My Life" deserves an occasion. I once went to a helicopter pilot's funeral, where Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" was cheesy but just the thing - not a dry eye in the place. And nothing matches Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" for skiing bumps.

Not sure about relevance, but this one always gets me. Might have to insist that Romanek's spectacular clip is played too.

I will be carried in to this:

then mourners will be treated to this:

    and then this:

    with a bit of this;

And I will be carried out to this:

And I expect everyone to sing along to all of these songs.

And there will be ALL Simply Red playing at the wake.

  • Andrew E,

Depending on the circumstances (aside from death), Arvo Part's Cantus in Memoriam for Benjamin Britten always sends a shiver down my spine.

When my sister was a naughty teenager she suggested she'd like Prince's Darling Nikki at hers. I'd like to think she's moved on from that now...
